Religion never did anyone any good IMO... I'm an atheist for a very good reason... It beggars belief that anyone could believe in a higher power who could possibly condone such behaviour and treatment of others!
This is the work of men who are keen to keep a country oppressed under a regime that suits them under the guise of Allah giving devine instruction....

Pah! complete and utter Bull
I hate religion, and I truly believe that it is the root of all of the really evil acts carried out in the world today.

Good post. Most religion is just a form of social control, usually based on scaring people who are afraid of death into believing that if they are good little boys and girls in this life, then they will luck out and get a special endless life of pleasure and happiness when they die.

It feeds on ignorance and fear.

A lot of thing feeds on ignorance and fear...

If the kids chose the name, and she is their teacher, she's in charge... and given she's in Saudi, she should be well aware of the name and the connotation, shouldn't she?

My MIL worked in Saudi for some time delivering babies... (by post,,, haha) and she was super aware of what the rules were.

Surely this teacher was not that stupid? I bet the Saudi people are thinking this too. Stupid move on her part and even more ridiculous on theirs ... but then ignorance is no excuse under the law, right?

Sorry, wrong country. Thanks.

But the point is still the same, regardless... If you're going to work in a country, wouldn't you be well aware of the rules?

Same as my MIL knowing she wasn't allowed to drive herself and that she couldn't appear in public uncovered... and had to wear the big black thing with her eyes peeping through.

Shouldn't a respected teacher, in a position of authority know the law of the country?

I think so.

I wonder what would have happened had she refused to use that name, and the kids all went home and told their parents that the teacher had maligned the name of the prophet by discounting it in the running for the name of the bear. Maybe she would have ended up in exactly the same position.

And it also shows how ingrained the religion is in the minds of the children that so many of them chose it as the name of the bear. I imagine that as soon as the first kid chose that name, she realised that she had made a terrible mistake, and that she was going to be buggered whichever way she went.

I think she was very naive...she should have known how sensitive they are about this subject especially when it involves westerners. She's an educated woman for gawd's sake.

Okay, reverse this situation in the UK. Would it receive the same publicity and sentence for the person involved? Eh NO!! Just goes to show that the world is pandering to certain religions etc for fear of being called racist?

I suppose a lot of hoohaa about the naming of a bear by children takes the worlds focus off the Sudanese governments treatment of people in Darfur.

Is the use of Mohammed as name only banned/frowned upon when it's not a person because their are a lot of men/boys around the world named Mohammed. When is the name allowed? Not being snarky, I really would like to know.

Well that's me told - I'll just agree with everything you say from now on then eh?

I do have to disagree with your 'obey they law of the country you're in' comment (or whatever it was - can't be arsed to multi-quote) as it seems the boot is on the other foot when most of these fundamentalist religous zealots go to other countries, obeying the rules is the furthest thing from their thoughts.

Are you referring to a specific case or is this just an opinion? I don't mean obey the law of the country you're in, I think I said you should be aware of the law of the country you're in. Those are two separate things...
If you are aware, and come on, a teacher must be aware of the laws and religion in Sudan for sure, then you are aware that you might be breaking laws or offending people.

I agree their treatment of the situation was OTT but is she thick or something?

Yay, let's call a Teddy bear Mohammed... Hmmm, do you think I should bounce this off my Head of Department first as that is a special name....
Na, no bother. If they don't like it, they'll just cut me head off.

Good article. Going back to the teacher though, I had no idea she was 50. I assumed she was a lot younger and maybe less aware of the Muslim system. She really should have known better, regardless of whether the rest of us think the punishment barbaric.

How often do we read on this forum about how foriegners should respect the laws of their host country?....or 'embrace the culture'?

Or does that just apply to immigrants to the UK?

What is happening in Sudan has very little to do with religion.....it is a pretty blatant attenpt to create a smokescreen to divert us all from the political situation in Darfur...we should not fall for it.

Knee jerk responses are unhelpful.

..and back to the earlier point...if someone is going to lve in a muslim country they should respect that culture.....just the same as we expect if muslims come to live here.
