Turkey is a secular nation though, where the rights and privileges of the citizenry in a (reasonably) democratic nation are placed higher than the dogmatic religious views of of any one particular group.

In Turkey, the secular government has the firm support of the military, though in recent times more 'fundamentalist' groups have been active in attempting to move away from secular rule towards majority islamic sharia law. The military have said in no uncertain terms that they would not support this move, and would take action to preserve secularism for all Turkish citizens.

How this might change in the future is anyone's guess however...

I am aware of this... although I'm sure that the same punishments would be dished out for insulting Attaturk... (founder of modern Turkey for the less educated!!) and the human rights record is on par with Sudan tbh!!

With reference to the post regarding 'bored housewives'...
I wish!!:p:rofl:;)

You would think there would be a lot of disagreement on that statement, surely ?

Britain (Great Britain) = A political term describing England, Scotland and Wales
UK (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) = Great Britain + N.I.

England comprises 84% of the population of the UK, and as a result, most of the world assumes that "British" people are English unless otherwise stated.

Obviously, if I was Welsh, Scottish, or from N.I, I may be less than impressed with that assumption ?

Let's ask the audience....
If you are English, would you mind someone referring to you as Scottish or Welsh ?

Always makes for a good discussion, this one :-)

No discussion to be had mate.

England governs, owns the land, wipe there noses in times of strife and dishes out a good spanking to militants like William Wallace when they get choppsy.

Actually, it's a great discussion.
It never ceases to amaze me how much confusion there is on this subject from citizens of the UK.

Here is a cracking article for you all to read :D
England is Not a Country

http://geography.about.com/od/politi...englandnot.htm
There are eight accepted criteria used to determine whether an entity is an independent country or not.

A country need only fail on one of the eight criteria to not meet the definition of independent country status. England does not meet all eight criteria; it fails on six of the eight criteria...

Didn't work so well on trying to keep the roughly 4 million choppsy Irish in shape !!

Hence the change of the title in 1921 from "United Kingdon of Great Britain and Ireland" to "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".

It did take approx 700 years of "choppsiness" to finally give the norman invaders the boot though.......
Could have done it a bit quicker, but being Irish, we were probably out partying too much :-)

Long live Choppsiness !!!!!

Correct. This it where it gets into the nitty gritty of what people consider themselves to be as opposed to what citizenship you actually are.

You can only be a citizen of a sovereign nation (in this case, "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland", commonly referred to as the UK, United Kingdom or Britain).

You cannot be a citizen of England, although you can certainly originate from there and be very proud of that fact.

A good mate of mine when asked where he is from always declares "London" rather than England, UK or anything else, such is his sense of identity with that city :-)

"Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it, you'd have good people doing good things and evil people doing bad things, but for good people to do bad things, it takes religion."

No, no. Cromwell issued the spanking on this occasion and the rivers ran red my friend.

Granted those south of the border aren't English, but all those decendants of the protestant settlers in Northern Ireland are.

Same here, near Bath.

But if I'd lived near Glasgow, I would still have lived in England. Just the province which we know as Scotland.

err no... Every Briton is a citizen of the UK, but not every Briton is English (ask a Welshman !!)

On the other hand, every Englishman certainly is a Briton.

I refer to my earlier post mate.

There's no confusion here. Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland - they're simply regions of England known as the United Kingdom. They have been for centuries.

All of the heel digging anti English spat is simply inherited from generation to generation as a fight for identity.

Given I don't have a Scottish or Welsh accent, I'd think anyone referring to me as such would be a bit thick.

but of course I wouldn't mind! It's not hard to correct someone for a simple mistake like that is it?
Chances are they're American anyway, in which case, they think Scotland and Wales are in Canada and the Antarctic, respectively. ;)

Rebuild the wall, re-dig the dyke - let's have England just as England, Scotland as Scotland, and the funny place with the sheep...well, whatever :D:thumbsup:

Yes, I agree. Lets split up the union, then we can laugh when the Scots come crawling back for aid when the oil has run out.

The regions are already a massive drain on the coffers of the exchequer. England would certainly profit from devolving from the union.

As sure as eggs is eggs, we'll always have the Scots to laugh at whatever happens. :)
