Someone pointed out the shape of the lights above the stadium is a little suspect and that it is a representation of the pyramid and light on the US dollar bill, and that weird mascot thing has one eye with a pyramid on top of his head. And also the medal that will be awarded to people has loads of hidden meanings in it like owls and things. Oh yes - also someone reckons the Olympic rings sculpture in London is exactly 33 feet long - which is a big number for masons for some reason.

My theory is the British media's mass campaign to ridicule everything in advance for weeks is the classic expectation-lowering gambit, so when it finally arrives and proceeds without fault everyone is blown away. For my part, I have never doubted that the British Olympics will go off without a hitch, and then I read about them raising the South Korean flag for the DPRK's team...

I have a friend who was at the opening ceremony rehearsal on Wednesday...I put him in the 'slightly irked with the olympics' camp having been pretty miffed about ticket allocations etc. Having said that, he thought what he saw was awesome...'extraordinary', I think he said...so hopefully it's a good show!

I may watch it early, will be up anyway with people off to work at 6am, 8 am...
Not usually into the olympics but have been quite impressed with the way the brits do an event/ceremony...
I think it will be pretty spectacular, amazing even, but what I really love is the cool, almost blasé way the UK presents things.
No bragging, no putting other nations down, no look at us were so great, no racist comments, no patting themself on the back, no pathetic we are the best/greatest/most wonderful... just welcome and enjoy

So true. There are people competing in highly technical sports - shooting, archery, fencing etc - who have to put so much in, and don't get millions out. In fact, it probably costs them a lot to get to their level. They do it for the love of their sport and to be the best.

Re: Is anyone going to watch the Olympic opening ceremony live?
Ohhh yes, there might be 7 channels but it will have one theme
I am not that sporty, so the only time I get excited about medals is if some tiny nation with 2 athletes win, but we probably wont hear about it.
Yesterday cracked me up, they had dragged up 4 aussies working at the olympics, ( probably first aiders or cleaners ) anyway the story went, they were there to advise the UK on how to match the Great Sydney olympics
The only thing I remember about that olympics was a cardboard cut out kangaroo and that awful bottle green and wiggle yellow uniform
