We have looked at Redlynch but will not make any decisions until we see where we would like to live & what the schools are actually like.
Does Smithfield have a good rep?

I live on the Tablelands in the mountains behind Cairns. Once my residency comes through I'll be looking for a property. I've been tempted by the idea of living on the coast, but not sure I can cope with three hours driving every day...

I'd be choosing one of the northern beaches if I worked in Cairns. Trinity is pretty good, so is Palm Cove.

We heard some good things about Smithfield but it's early days yet. They are definitely good at ICT but it would seem way behind in the Maths. Not sure yet whether that is all schools though. I am looking into it at present. I think this is why it's important to go at the end of a term so we still have time to either move schools or sort out something with existing school.

Most expats I've talked to seem to have gone the private school route as it looks as if those schools are better. Cairns High has a very good rep but Jamie doesn't really want to travel into Cairns each day

Oh, stop your carping.

There's great shore fishing and boat fishing in Cairns and surrounds. I get out to fish when I can. The real problem is that you have to fit it in around diving, sailing, golfing and, sadly, working.

Im a loner moving to Cairns and will be looking to rent an apartment when i arrive. Ive been looking on the internet for places close to a bus route (i wont be buying a car any time soon - unless they are cheap to buy and run) and have spotted Yorkeys Knob (Fairweather Street to be precise - i like the name!).

Has anyone had any experience of Yorkeys Knob (please dont give rude answers!! :p) as i have never visited cairns before?

Yorkeys looks quite nice but it is a long road down into it from the main highway. You may be better off at Trinity Beach. We are at Trinity Beach and bus route really good. You won't have a problem finding a rental. We got one within a week and my parents have just come out and it's only taken them a few days to find a really nice rental in Clifton Beach.
