I'm going to Cairns!!! Yey. Thought I was the only one...everyone else on here seems to mention Sydney, Perth, Brisbane etc.

I too (hopefully) will be flying out in January!!! Haven't quite lodged visa yet...but it's an RSMS 119 so hoping it will be pretty quick coming through!

I'm going as a loner so perhaps once we're all out there we could hang out/meet up?

For Cairns the RSMS visa applications are usually lodged in Brisbane.
Check out the RSMS thread for details but in a nutshell they have a backlog. http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=540886

As of 1 week ago it was 2500 applications. Timeframe has been 6 months before getting a CO but this does seem to be improving as they have taken on some extra staff. I know that major companies like BHP and Rio who hold a lot of sway have not been able to short circuit it.

I don't want to put a dampener on your life but want you to know the facts. No-one knows for sure how long it will be but just be aware it could be a few months.

There are a few of us in Cairns who meet in some form or another quite regularly. For example a new arrival wanted to meet a couple of us for a drink last weekend and 16 of us rocked up.

The jungle drums work well and we do hang out - it's the hot weather you see. :p

Yip, most people do go to the major cities. There a lot of misguided folk about.

Don't have a clue where we are going to stay just yet, as we were hoping to come out without the kids a few weeks earlier to sort out the rented house, buy a car etc etc, but a little problem of the CO requesting a HIV test for the eldest has changed our plans, so I think its turn up clueless living out of suitcases to start :)

Not been to Aus before!
We have lived abroad before though, so had a good idea of what we were looking for. We considered Adelaide & Bunbury before settling on Cairns. The more laidback approach, good temperatures all year & the lush rainforest won us over.
