When the incident happened it was headline news in the Inidan papers as a racist attack, l wonder if the Inidan media will now tell the truth that it was an insurance fraud, l wouldn't be suprised if they don't mention it.

Oh, Mohogony...yet MORE seemingly plucked from thin air stats!
According to the Australian government here:
The ABS defines assault as the direct infliction of force, injury or violence upon a person, including attempts or threats. It excludes sexual assault.
There were 176,427 recorded assaults in Australia in 2007, constituting 840 victims per 100,000 of the population.

Victoria: 21,404 assaults in 2008

The standard assault rate in Melbourne is: 2,628.7 per 100,000

The average rate of assault on Indian nationalities was 2,854 per 100,000 population (but maybe lower if students were to be included in the population figure)

A local phrase to consider ... "Indian Giver" ... One who pretends to give something but wants it back.

What does this say about the level of racism in Oz? Nothing, I just wanted to mention it.

I think mohogony is referring to this http://www.thehindu.com/2010/01/10/s...1057070100.htm
“Why cannot they arrest them and put them behind bars and prosecute them?"
Obviously in this case it's because they didn't exist. But it brings up an interesting point. I've seen our mate from Bangalore on here banging on that the Vic Police need to solve this problem by arresting people. Not sure what happens in India but there seems to be a serious lack of understanding that in Australia the Police are only allowed to arrest suspects. They have to have at least one piece of evidence (and hopefully more) before they can make an arrest. I'd like to know how they chose people to be arrested in India if it's just a matter of arresting people and slinging them behind bars.

This line from the link highlights an interesting point.

Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur said Mr. Singh, from Punjab, was not keen on detailing the incident
Mr. Singh was Happy enough to torch his car (and himself by accident) and try to make a fraudulent insurance claim....Knowing fine well that another Indian man's partially burnt body was found in Griffith only a week earlier.... He probably thought if he kept quiet he probably could pull it off.... just let the media hype blame 'Unknown Australian Thugs'

It appears that some people wish to find the Australian people guilty, before even finding out ANY facts, let alone having anything proven.
One thing that this has shown... do not believe what some people say in future.

In Australia there is something called Innocent until proven guilty....
