The 2007-08 Australian National Health Survey
- 61.4% of the Australian population are either overweight or obese
The 2008 Health Survey for England (HSE) data shows that:
- 61.4% of adults (aged 16 or over) in England were overweight or obese
Quite a similarity between the two countries....
Even the figures for Obesity are very similar
- England: 24.5% of adults, men and women were equally were obese.
- Australia: 25.6% of males and 24% of females were classified as obese

Life choices and chances? The suburb and the car - the availability of fast and rubbish food? Demographics?
Bit of bad luck with the medical history?
I see plenty of overweight people but like any naturalist, I know where I can find them and I know where I can minimise the chances of an encounter...
Although I see more fat people in Australia than in the UK, I'm inclined to agree with the official stats....and say there is not much in it - and yes, it is hard to prove because of the fact it is so hard to compare like with like.

i was certainly much healthier in australia, there is also a phenomenon known as the "Heathrow injection" (leads to a stone weight gain that mysteriosly drops off on departure) that aussies complain about once in the uk, you can put this down to booze but then they drink enough of that in oz to rule this out as an excuse! There is nothing like a cold miserable evening and a depressing tube ride to discourage you from excercise and encourage you to veg in front of the tele eating crap

My view is both countries have an unquantifiable problem. Why argue about which is worst? Fix it.
