Where to live near Sydney

Thank you. I've been looking at the Train Timetable - it's a pretty useful guide.
What I would really like to see, is some kind of program, a bit like a combination of autoroute or ms streets, where you can click on Sydney for example and say 'show me what is an hour from here' and then see a graphical representation of what areas can be reached in an hour by car (based on average driving speed for roads used to get there) and also for the train.
This would be well useful, and not just for Australian locations

The public transport journey planner on www.131500.com.au should help you.
An edge of the mountains alternative that colleagues live at is Springfield. Closer to Sydney and supposed to be OK. Beaches are a bit of a treck though.

If you want close to Sydney but fairly isolated try Kurnell or Bundeena.
Hell, try Wiseman's Ferry too.

erm Kurnell has 2 problems:
1. a huge great Caltex Oil refinery
2. There are 2 runways pointing straight at it from the other side of Botany Bay.
3. Its a long haul to transport (Cronulla) each day.
(thats 3, but the last 1 is a little minor)
Ned - I do recommend Sutherland as worth a look AND just about affordable. It also has a nice community feel. Lots of the suburbs are little more than old villages joined together. also close to beach at Cronulla and huge national park.
Try these suburbs on your real estate web site:
Jannali
Como
Oyster Bay
Bonnet Bay
Gymea
Sutherland
You'll get the general idea.
one tip - when estate agents describe properties as having a 'stunning bushland view' or 'backs on to gorgeous bushland' This generally means your house is about to be fried in the next bush fire, but at least you'll be able to watch it coming.
