ssshhhhhhhh....don't get done for dissent!

I do love it here....Australian is an easier language to learn than German, or French or Spanish or Italian. What must it be like relocating to a European country?

There is something called due dilligence which surely they carried out before coming here especially those who come without PR.

Australia is a small nation on the edge of the world and completely in a world of its own. Apart from towing the line on some USA policy resulting from the second world war, mainstream Australia is completely oblivious to any thing apart from itself.

Why would a sophisticated, succesful European come here in the first place. It is full of people who have run away from something, the clever ones embrace Australia and make a good life in a country that allows you to do just that.

Jeremy Clarkson did an excellent article on expats which raised a few hackles.

The worst thing about Australia for me is that I still get to hear the names Sainsburys, Tescos and Marks and Spencers mentioned.

I personally feel able to prefer to live here than the UK and still not actually like everything about it. The same could be said about anywhere I chose to live.

Anyone who says that they love everything about Australia is either a liar or sets their personal bar pretty darn low ;)

It therefore follows that we're allowed a tongue in cheek whine about those things which irritate us as expats:D

What sort of medical expenses do you have to pay for then? I'm only just getting my head around this group-billing stuff for Dr's appointments.

Rates:
No, Renters do not pay rates. These are paid by the lanlord.

Medical:
You pay for prescriptions, and for Dentists.
Bulk Billing Doctors are free.
About 30% of people pay for doctors visits, but reclaim a major part of the cost.

State Hospitals are free, Private ones you pay for.
Private Specialist are expensive, with only a small part repaid by Medicare. Government ones are free.

It's the people who believe everything they read, and make decisions based on it that is a bit scary:D

But as long as everyone realises it is a tongue in cheek whine and the people who do so still feel able to prefer to live here than the UK

I've said it often on this forum - some of you people that hate Australia so much don't need to move back to the UK, but move to a nice suburb with normal people, good schools, okay shopping and not an obese commodore driving bogan in sight.

Oh Kim!! How dare you! ;)My family and I are all quite well educated, dress to a decent standard, have all our own teeth and, as far as I know, don't speak with any sort of Ocker accent. Come to think of it, the same applies to all our friends who also hail from Bunbury. You could go to any town/city in Australia and find a Bogan element.

I'm talking MY country cousins Floss - they're pretty rough around the edges (not the ones you went to school with either - other side of the family). But as I said, I love them anyway. :) I love Bunbury - fondest memories of my childhood are drop netting down the estuary, carrying cardboard over to the sand dunes, the skating rink, those blue light discos they had in that old hall thing near the original shopping centre in town. My husband's brother-in-law's family bought the old Giacci house and converted it into a respite care facility about ten years ago and a few years back we spent Easter there when all the patients had gone home - it was a blast.

I wasn't bagging Bunbury, just the guy who reckons he finds nothing but people who say "beer o'clock" and drive pissed passed the primary school on Fridays. Met up with Poitin night before last to say happy journey and see you on the other side. When do you head back?

Hey when I was 10 the DS hadn't been invented - we actually had to go outside and find things to amuse ourselves. Going off on our pushbikes to catch crabs or carrying cardboard to the beach were the highlight of the school holidays.

By the way, the cardboard was used to sit on and slide down the sand dunes at high speeds and trying not to collide with the other ten kids zooming down at the same time - top fun even if there were a few broken limbs involved.

Adding to the above... most of the people I have met here have taken out private health insurance as dental costs are high and public health services not that great but I'm sure this varies from place to place (just like the UK). Also, the Australian govt. encourages you to take out private health insurance by giving you a rebate on your premium (applies to PRs) - also, as a new migrant you are given 12 months after registering with Medicare to take up PH insurance without having to pay Lifetime Health Cover - this is an extra 2% on top of your hospital cover premium for each year you are aged over 30 at the time you purchase your cover.

You don't really need to do much research to realise that when you live in a country as far away from other countries as Oz is you will be holidaying in Oz. About 15 seconds looking at an atlas should do it.

Just because a place is good for a holiday does not mean it will be a good place to live.

Hence the reason why Melbourne is the fastest growing city in Oz. It's not the "holiday spot" that the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast or even Perth is, although plenty of people do holiday in Melbourne. It is, however, a fantastic place to live.

On days like today (and why is it worse at weekends) - the bloody wildlife that rachets up the volume to be louder than a 747. Cockatoos are the worst followed closely by the magpies, currawongs and indian mynahs.
The weather - hot summer days when you darent go out of the house for fear of being burned to a crisp and have your skin turn into old bootleather as you sprint from one airconditioned environment to another and on the other hand, the cold weather in houses that werent built for the cold with shocking insulation and piss poor heating which costs a bomb to run.
The arrogant Aussie Aussie Aussie oy oy oy at every turn, how Australia is bigger, better, more wonderful than paradise on a stick. A bit of nationalism is OK but this is adolescent in the extreme.
The driving - never encountered so many tail-gaters, cutters-in and generally people who cannot drive round a roundabout to save their lives and no courtesy at all.
The boring blandness of the scenery - mile after mile of eucalyptus and bark drop and the long distances you have to drive to get to anything that is vaguely different.
The PC intrusion into everything you do - the nanny state personified! All rights and no responsibilities.
The superficiality of friendships - here today and gone tomorrow and all out for what they can get out of you.
Lack of history relevant to me - a few grinding stones and myths about natural features dont really interest me in the least.
The flies (and mozzies).
The cost of airfares out of the place - why is it that flying out of Australia is so damned expensive compared with the same flights bought in UK?

That'll do to start with - and blame it on the dawn cacophony, no one should be awake at this time of day on a weekend!

Blimey I totally agreed with 3/4's of that.

I dont get bothered by the birds, and the Drivers around here actually let you in... I've noticed a big difference around the rest of the Country on that one..... Sydney Rd couldnt function if they didnt let parked drivers back into the traffic flow.... easy to tell a non local... They do tailgate though..

Good observations Quoll and you can add my name to most of that.
