Kezza - we do the same as you... we have 3 sheep too (we did start off with inheriting 4 from the previous owners) the shearer comes round... one year it cost us $30 for them because they had a lot of wool! Our neighbour takes them to sell them and we let him keep the money from the wool because he goes to the effort of taking them away.
You off to aggfest this weekend???
Will have to meet for a drink/bite to eat sometime.

Effie, If you want we are more than happy to come and collect the wool from you as Vikky spins the wool.( Would even exchange it for a nice bottle of wine for you!) If you knit Vikky can spin it ready for you to knit.

We will probably head to Agfest... just for a couple of hours as I dont think our 18 mth old will last much longer than that... the wool sounds like a great idea - I'll check with our neighbour as well because he may do the same. I do knit too. I'm not sure when they are next scheduled for a shearing but will definitely let you kow.
Cathy - ahhhh chips and vinegar! Have to admit I like chips just with salt or as my dutch friend has them with mayo! I'm another that heads for fish and chips as soon as I get to England - only 3 and a half months for me... then head to sainsburys for twiglets! I do love our little english 'lolly' shop here though, sometimes treat myself to a double decker. Gummy shark/flake is an actual shark (I think!) but its a really nice boneless fish.

There is a parenting facility at Agfest, Which Vikky will be helping out with from 11:30-13:30 ish, The parenting facilities are right in the middle next to the big speakers hanging from the crane. Vikky will have her badge on so can go over and say hi!!!
Was up there on Wed helping set things up. The nice man who runs the choclate shop in town will be at Agfest as he also runs a steak sandwich stall, His sandwichs are awesome. I will be having one at agfest.

I love seeing the things that people miss - twiglets - that's the 1st time i've heard that one said! Can understand the DoubleDecker treat though - love them myself.

Will have to read up on the tassie fish before we come over i think....Just to get an idea of what's about... I'm actually cooking fish for dinner tonight - Basa - although i'm not sure whether to make a fish curry for a change....still trying to decide!
Hope you all enjoy the Agfest festival those of you going!

Ok enough is enough, I have held out long enough as I too am sick of the "best/worst suburb" debate but I have too ask as we are getting confused by what we see on the tinterweb as we call it.
So sorry to bore people and I can take the groans but please people I beg you what are the good and bad parts of Hobart and Launceston? or if not good and bad what do they offer a couple with a young child you love the countryside (am considering buying land in the long term) but may need to be near a big place for work. To begin with we will have to rent so probably close to Hobart/Launceston.
We have seen Moonah (I think that is how it is spelt) come up a bit with reasonable rents? is this an ok place? also is it our imagination or is rent in Hobart as bad as Sydney/Melbourne/London?
Thanks for listening

Depends what you want, You can live 10-15 mins drive out of town and be in the middle of nowhere with land. Or can live 10-15 mins walk to town and have a nice house in West Launceston.

mm it pretty impossible to answer what i think is a dump the next person will love and vice versa! cant you come and do a recckie? also it really depends on your life style, do you want pubs on your doorstep or remote living? I'd say the later is what draws many people to Tas
anyhoo we intended living in Hobart prior to moving here. all I can say is we were told before we arrived that Moonah is a dump, reckon anywhere close to a city with reasonable rents arent going to be that good an area.
Only managed to stick Hobart for 5 days we hated it, Sandy Bay looks nice though also looks very built up, looking into peoples bedrooms/backyards. yep rents are riddiculus Hobart thinks its on a par to Melbourne
it certainly isnt.Bellerive looks nice but some places around look dodgy ie claremont, mornington the prison is in Risdon.
launceston some lovely houses in Travallyen but if your car broke down hell of a hill to climb. If you like leggo land styles then Blackstone Heights is nice and close to the casino/golf course. Some nice areas out of town Evendale is lovely, rural places like Relbia into the wine regions some great houses, up the tamar river to Rosevears, gravelley beach and surrounds are lovely some believe the pulp mill will affect the river?
it really depends on how quiet you want it

Hi
Difficult to answer really because as already said, what one person loves another might hate!
So this is just my opinion:
Moonah, along with most of the Northern subs would not be my choice, a bit grotty in places. Saying that there are some lovespots in North Hobart.
Bridgewater, Risdon, Berriedale etc on the upper eastern shore, not great reputation!
Bellerive, Howrah, Tranmere and Lindisfarne - all have nice spots, handy for the city too
Kingston - reasonable facilities, expanding rapidly, nice beach, along with Blackmans Bay which it joins into. Good choice of schools too.
Going further down the channel, we live at Margate, which I think it quite nice, only about 20 mins or so into Hoabrt but far enough out to feel a bit more rural, beyond us are some lovely places, Conningham, Kettering etc.
The Huon Valley is pretty, a bit more green than many places, with Huonville being the main town and then getting smaller and quieter as you go down south.
It really depends on what you want, acreage or town, (or a bit of both which is perfectly possible here) Will you have a car, ideally one each here as we only have the one and find it hard juggling with us both working and 2 children. Public transport is not so good in this direction, probably better the nearer you are to the city.
There are nice roads and not so nice roads in every suburb, are you in SA right now, if you are, I'd definitely suggest you comeover and look around. Generally speaking people move to Tas from interstate and further, for the lifestyle, the scenery, the wildlife, the (relative) lack of people, they don't tend to come here for the nightlife or shopping

Feel free to ask away, there are others on here who live in different parts of Tas, and we're all bound to have varying opinions of the areas we live in.
Sam
PS Don't really know about the rents for Sydney or Melbourne but we had no problems finding a really nice, almost new house, 4 beds, in Blackman's Bay with wonderful views over the sea, for $400 per week. If we had gone down to 3 beds and a bit cheaper, there was more competition as there were more popular but still a reasonable choice I think. We did look at some horrors though, so watch out!

We are now living in a sleepy place called Magra, it's 5 minutes away from New Norfolk and have acreage, most properties in the area have acreage. It is roughly about 50 minutes to Hobart from here. In my opinion the Derwent Valley is breathtaking, we are very happy here, the people are just soooo friendly. I have found that country areas always seem to be that bit more friendlier. There are no keep up with the Jones's around here, just peeps getting on and enjoying there lives, the way it should be.
You really must come and see for yourselves because what's good for the goose may not be good for the gander.
Good luck with your quest!!!
