the roads in germany are safer yet a lot faster as people drive carefully at speed.
there are cameras on autobahns for cars following too close to the vehicle in front,
driving on the inside lane and only using the middle and outside to overtake is the norm as if you dont you get a porsche up your backside hooting and flashing you to get out of the way,
new drivers are kept to small engined cars by the cost of insurance
speed of itself does not kill, drivers who cannot cope with driving at speed do and speeding when road conditions are adverse to speeding
but that's only my opinion

Where did you pull that 7 minutes from? Is every journey you do 50km is length? On a drive BNE-SYD that kind of speed differential will save you nearly an hour and a half - thats a significantly shorter time to be concentrating and possibly a shorter time exposed to the extreme dangers of 'driving tired'.
Also consider the stess of driving at a artificially slow speed. It takes constant focus to remain at Australian 'snail pace' speeds on the road. This focus detracts from the important business of paying attention to the road conditions and traffic around you. If driving at a 'natural' speed allows people to concentrate more on their surroundings then safety will be improved.
Is rigidly following the speed limit so important that a driver has to risk others lives to ensure compliance?
(OK - I'll admit the above point may be laboured somewhat - but as a particularly 'vulnerable' road user I spend my life dodging poor attentive drivers on the roads and cursing dangerous driving practices as I take evasive action to maintain my status as an 'alive' person - Many of th drivers I dodge are religiously sticking to the speed limit as they drift mindlessly across lanes, through red lights and generally into my 'death zone'. I have almost NEVER been threatened by a driver exceeding the speed limit.)

I to would do away with fixed cameras and allow more random mobile cameras. But the holy grail (For Europe) will probably become reality within a decade when the Galileo GPS satellite is finally stuck up in space and each vehicle has a mandatory fitted device. Then all the camera haters will be wishing they could have the cameras back!

Speeding is the number 1 killer.

WRONG! Speed is the only control measure that can be implemented. Deaths on the road are a combination of factors it is never ever one factor alone that kills.

Where are the speed cameras after dark when the real nutters come out to play and when the little old men weave into your lane without a care in the world?

Have you ever witnessed from 8 feet away a 5 year old girl get knocked over by a speeding driving? I have - and I will remember the sickening sound the impact made for the rest of my life.
Totally avoidable if the driver had been obeying the speed limit. I repeat wait until it happens to you, then you will soon change your opinion.
Speed is one variable that can be controlled by me, you and everyone else so why do people choose to ignore it? Are you that important you need to get to your destination quicker?

Well actually you are wrong but I can't be bothered to debate that point.

It may not have been relatively dangerous given the conditions, in your opinion. But, given you are so far over the limit it wouldn't give much credibility to your judgement on road safety.
Thanks for the voluntary contribution, I hope it's used wisely by the powers that be but I doubt it ...
And the argument that '90%' of people do it is just pathetic.
I'll get off my high horse now, hope to never meet you on the roads.

I thought this was going to be a Commonwealth games thread...
It's not sporting...just park up infront as if some major component on your car is about to fail..and then make a pretence of using your mobile...

If he was doing less or equal to the maximum speed, he wouldn't have hit her down you. Can you understand that? The faster you go, the larger the stoppage distance!

I assume this incident did not happen on the motorway and it was in a high pedestrian area?

I would like to call you something not very nice for such a lack of understanding but I will refrain. And it wouldn't be that constructive.

Was nobody supervising said child? Quite another issue there.

Just got a $200 fine and 3 points for doing 114 kph on the Gateway motorway.
I don't mind the fine or the points 'cos it was a fair cop.
What I do mind is that the camera was in a vehicle which looked like a workman's ute, complete with yellow light on top.
It was not the usual speed camera van or even one of the Nissan Patrols that they sometimes use.
Be warned......
