Fair enough, NZ stole the thunder with a transgender one a while ago but still, it's progress.

Election is over - time to be unsensible.

No. Winning's one thing. Compromising your principles just to get over the line is another. Labor didn't win. They maintain power only at the grace of the independents. In other words they've been bent over...

I see the badmouthing by the coalition has started already: "as much legitimacy as the Pakistani cricket team" said Brandis today apparently.
They have a point.

The aussies are such bad losers, its hugely entertaining stuff.
And so will the next 10 months of govt.

But the coalition were bending over even further and spreading their cheeks even wider, so to speak. I don't see how you can criticise one side for compromising their principles, but not the other?

It's one thing talking about doing something and another thing to actually do it. Liberal talked and Labor put out.

ooo - what a cheeky flirt that Tony is eh

Absolute nonsense. Abbott would have sold his granny to get in power.

Of course he would but he didn't have to. However there was talk in the Liberal camp that maybe it would be better to walk away. It would've taken a lot of power away from the independents.

To be quite honest, from a negotiation standpoint both were more than happy to drop their pants at the first opportunity.

It was only a 5.41% swing against Labor, not quite enough with a result so close... they needed 5.42% !!

They voted for an Independent, not someone who would align themselves with the 3rd party of their choice.

Many voters in those electorates chose Liberal/National as their second choice, but ended up with their vote going Labor, due to their "conservative" independent now choosing Labor, after the vote.

It comes as part of the system Aus inherited from the UK. Same thing happened earlier this year when the lib-dems gave all their votes to the cons. Unless we have national electorates it's always something that could happen.

I respect the differing views of members, I think that this has been a very good discussion thread [kudos to all who have posted] which has been running for over a month, you dropped by this morning.

But all who support this government had better get used to the insults, I recommend the following article just so we all undestand where we go from here.

Source
That source of yours is obviously Labor, as the wording they used was:

If the Coalition doesn’t clearly win, a majority of Coalition voters believe it is simply not acceptable.

But in reality it is:
If ANY party doesn’t clearly win, a majority of people believe it is simply not acceptable.
Do you think Australia should have another Federal election in the next 12 months?
  • 52% Yes
  • 33% No
The REALLY interesting point, from figures used by your source, is that 48% of Labor voters even think we should have another election !!
But then, that is the Australian Preference system, which sometimes goes wrong.
