We were in woody point about 1klm away, we found within 15 minutes, restaruants, great pub, biggest shopping centre within queensland plus several others, olympic ice skating, biggest bunnings in queensland, multi screen cinemas, bowling, tennis, cricket etc, several areas with beaches, 3 jettys, 2 huge beachside swimming pools, heritage walks and museum, miles of bike/walking track to name a few. Plenty of events down there too from seafood festivals to last weekend it was opening of a new pier, but it was rather windy area gets a great sea breeze. City was a 30 minute drive, but a huge new bridge opens early next year, which will cut travel time to city/airport wherever.

As for stuff closing early, thats an aussie thing, you probably wont escape it unless your into nightclubs, or in the main part of some cities ( syd, melb, valley brisbane etc ) on a friday/saturday night.

You are from County Durham so made of stronger stuff you will find it a breeze.

Everyones tastes are different so don't read too much into what people say it's what you experience and like yourselves.

We're used to green fields so hate new housing estates, others love them.

Basically buy near your jobs is the simplest motto in an area near work that you like. As it's your trip to work and associated traffic of near by train stations etc. that will be some of the bigger impactors on your life.

We joined the RSL club in Redcliffe , It was like Teddy's in Withernsea , {locals to me will know that one} . I can't say anything was bad about Redcliffe , except that it felt really old . It isn't modern . It felt like stepping back in time .
Yes , true you are reasonably close to those things that somebody mentioned , ice arena , large shopping mall etc , but they are a fair distance away .
It isnt always as easy to buy / rent near to where u work , I am an electrician , and I was sent all over Brisbane ,to places like Murrarie , Wacol , City , Sumner Park , These all were approx 60 to 90 mins each way {Sat in traffic on Gympie Rd }. Why not move ? Because the Mrs was close to her work . So I had to put up with it . In that year I did 44000 klms , not much fun .
Redcliffe is close , relatively , to the Sunshine coast , 60 to 90 mins drive to the beach .
Trying to get into the city for a night out was a bit of a nightmare too , taxi , or bus to sandgate , get the train into town , have a night out . get back to the station and then train to sandgate , and hope theres a taxi there . Few times got fed up at Sandgate station waiting for a taxi .
Just a few things that happened to me .

[QUOTE=annqldau;7182557]http://www.belvederehotel.com.au/ great Steak and Crab food section as well and also a eat as much as you want buffet and then a front restaruant with different meals again plus the usual sports bar and outside seating deck overlooking the bay and Hornibrook bridge (and the building works temporarily)

Don't forget the Boat Club at Scarborough not a bad pint in there, you need to join if you go regular but it's next to nothing for three years membership.

Also another good pub is the http://www.fullmoonhotel.com.au/hotel/about.fmh at Sandgate for drinks and meals.

Hey ! My hubby works at the Bel-its a great family pub with a good atmosphere! We go all the time cos it has a good play area for the kids.
We live Woody point and I work at the Redcliffe Hospital-wouldnt move anywhere else-we love it.Close to Brisbane but not too close.! hour to sunshine coast,1 hr to Gold Coast (Dreamworld).
Its worth a look!x

Yep Belvedere is very nice for a drink and a munch and a relaxing view of the bay.

Even if you work out of Redcliffe as long as you have a car it's no problem as roads flow well unless you use Gateway on a regular basis and unlike many other places Redcliffe area prices are still realistic as it's only just caught the eye of developers in the last few years. Give it a few years and they will have rocketed.

Would have preferred to have been closer to the city .
We are in North Lakes area and regularly make the trip to Redcliffe for this and that. The way we see it is pretty much everywhere is 'too far' from anything in Australia. Here we think nothing of a 15 minute drive to the Lagoon or large parks at Redcliffe whereas in the UK there's no way we'd drive that long just for an hour's play in the park. Distance is just something you have to get used to here. As for everything closing early, we've found that unless you're right in the middle of the CBD then most places are closed early anyway. Family time is important to Aussies so you won't find people being expected to work stupid hours just because someone wants a coffee at 10pm.

We were living southside at Manly before we moved here. It's very different but we're much happier here. Being in North Lakes we have the convenience of a rapidly developing modern town around us and although 'legoland' may not appeal to some it suits us perfectly. If we want a big shopping centre Chermside is only 20 minutes south - we never need to go to the CBD for retail therapy, thank god. Redcliffe is about 15 mins east and has a nice beach, lots of great play areas and a free public swimming pool. We can easily keep ourselves entertained here for only the cost of fuel to get here and there - but I'd say that's pretty general for most places we've been to so far. There's a little Zoo up the road from us which, in our opinion, is far nicer than Australia Zoo (less crowded or commercialised, half the price and has everything there except the Crocs) and the Sunshine Coast isn't too far north - but we tend to go to Bribie Island if we want a nice soft sandy beach - that's about 45 mins north of us.

I would say that if you were a young childless couple who still enjoy going out a lot then no Redcliffe wouldn't be suitable - you would have to be considerably closer to the CBD to continue that lifestyle. For young families or people who prefer a quieter lifestyle then the Redcliffe area is ideal. I'm very happy to be settling in this area long-term.
