I'd been in Australia for about a year when, as part of my job, I had to drive north up the Strzlecki Track after dark. Something seemed strange until I realised that I could see stars right down to the horizon for a full 360 degrees - there was no ambient light from towns anywhere to block them out.
Nighttime in the outback is just magic and unique to Australia.

I fell asleep in a drunken stupor on the bus on the way home from the pub on one occasion after staggering on to the bus after a heavy session at the Normanby. I missed my stop, and the eventually the bus driver got all the way to the end of the route with me still crashed out. He very gently strolled up to me and said, "Hey buddy - were you intending on getting off the bus at all?". I woke up with a bit of a start and responded, "oh crap!". After a brief chat we established that he was driving back to the depot anyway - so he gave me a lift home on the way.
Little things - but that kind of courtesy and kindness goes a long way and really leaves a great impression.

Last year at Christmas time we had invites from three different families for Xmas day (brekkie, Lunch and evening!!) as they realised we we far from home. A full on day but very memorable!
Xmas is a difficult time for me so I really appreciated people inviting us into their homes......

Bit like Chortlepuss....our very first year in Oz, living in Sydney and I was assigned a short term project in Canberra commuting every week. Almost straight away clicked with my boss and we became really good friends, invited me to dinner one night with his wife....at their own Vineyard!!! Got on famously and well all laughed, drank and ate in such beautiful surroundings watching the sun go down over the vines and hillsides.
An 'off the cuff' , as I thought at the time, drunken remark from his wife of "Look, you can't spend your first Christmas in Oz with no family, come here and stay with us and be part of ours." The next weekend she called me at home and again repeated the offer and spoke to my wife and it was sorted.
We went to their vineyard on Christmas Eve and left on Boxing Day, were given the most extraordinary welcome by them and their kids, 6 of them!!, and there extended family of brothers and sisters, cousins etc etc. My wife and son were overwhelmed by their generosity, of pure kindness and human warmth, and the most bizarre thing happened to me. Their relatives all turned up and we were introduced and all helloes were said, I went up to a young guy and said "Hi, I'm Paddy"...He said "Hi, so am I"!! So we laughed about that then I said well the best way to avoid confusion was to use our last names and gave him mine...his was the same!!! The same bloody name and our hosts didn't realise!! We all had a good laugh about it then we suddenly realised that out of the 25 people that were there 12 of them were sharing our last name which is quite a distinct Irish name!!! What a great day....and a very sore head the next!!
