I have been here for 2 years 4 months but went to the doctor for the first time this week. It was so efficient, making an appointment, getting one for the next day, in waiting room for about three minutes, blood tests taken straight away and off to a specialist next week.

If I compare to my experience in the UK; taking forever to get through on the phone, snotty receptionists, hard to get appointments, appointments never running on time etc. I would have to be feeling half dead before I would even contemplate going to doctors in UK.

The reason for this? You have to pay!!! If you don't get a good service you can go and take your money elsewhere so for the surgery it's all about customer service. It is also why people don't go to the docs unnecessarily or call ambulances. I think oz health system is great. NHS in UK has failed. Time to follow Aus I think.

No it hasn't. It's not perfect and it may not be as good as people want/expect but it works very very well for the vast majority of UK residents.

I work in it and I can tell you it is failing many people. Ambulances stuck outside A+E depts for hours, patients having to be taken to hospitals hundreds of miles away to get a bed. Wards closing to save money. I've worked in the UK an OZ system and there is a huge difference for the vast majority of people!!
What experience do you have Moneypenny?

I have had good and bad experiences in both countries. Neither system is failing in all locations. In the country here the system is wonderful (against the odds too) but in the city on a saturday night in casualty I'm sure there are problems.

Demand will nearly always outstrip supply in any health serivice.

I sometimes wonder if the fact that you have to pay a little bit in Oz (not always and not all people) helps to keep demand down. It must help to keep frivolous demands out of the system.

Anyway, my visit for surgery here (all free) was top notch!

And its free at the point of use - which means you don't get the ridiculous situation where people neglect their health because they cannot afford to see a doctor.

But you do however get the even more ridiculous situation of people sitting in ACCIDENT AND EMERGENCY depts for things like common colds because they cannot get an appointment with their GP for 2 weeks!

What experience do you have Moneypenny?
I've been a 'customer' as have all friends and family. Apart from a couple of vaguely negative situations, most have had excellent service and it's still ongoing with those there now. Don't attempt to patronise me, it's simply annoying and silly. We all have different experiences, just because you work in hospitals does not make your opinion any more valid than mine.
