I personally would not live on the Gold/Sunshine coasts..nor I would choose to live in some of the Western suburbs of Sydney.
Like London there are up and coming areas - some say even Paramatta.
Avoid places like Bankstown, Campsie, the stops on the line that head out that way.
There are also areas like Blacktown (NW) I have heard are a bit dodgy.
Can't go wrong with the Northern Shore really esp areas like Ryde, Denistone, Eastwood v popular.
Hornsby fairly distant but nice. My aunt lives there. If you are a londoner its no shakes for the commute.
