Really depends on what trade he has the recent experience in as he will need to apply under that trade for his visa.

I know there is a lot of plumbers that just can't get licenced once they get here, but then again it's not so easy for Electricians either.

You'd be best to ring a registered migration agent, and get a free initial consultation to assess what they think would be the best route to go down. Also research what each profession entails both for pre-migration and once you are here to see which would be the easier. (You don't have to work in the trade you apply under if you come on a skilled independant visa 175 though)

For skills assessments see www.vetassess.com.au

thanks for your speedy reply much appreciated, but what seems to be the difficultly in getting the licience ,after all the basic rules of the properties of gas, and for that ohoms law on the electric side do not change no matter wot country your in..he,s currently very experience in both trades, as the job he does requires these trades to be ran side by side.i dont what to sound cheeky by this post ,if that is how it comes accross,i just lack information, which all information is helpful. we have read most of your posts and are very impressed by what u yr knowledge is. thanks kev and san

You'd think that wouldn't you but sadly it can be hard to get licence here. He will have to attend courses to be able to apply for a licence to work, the UK qualifications mean nothing here. All the states have different rules and regulations on what you need to do to get a licence, and they all take a different amount of time to get.

As an example, my OH is a sparky and in South Australia you need to attend a course called the 'wiring rules' (http://www.peer.com.au/courses.htm), this costs about $500 and takes approx 3 weeks to get. In addition to that you need an ARTC certificate from the TRA (http://www.workplace.gov.au/workplac...nresidents.htm)

All in all, it takes about 6 - 8 weeks to get everything you need to be able to apply for a licence so that you can get a job.

In QLD the same licence takes about 3 - 6 months to get. In Victoria it can take a year (or so I'm led to believe).

Getting a visa and migrating are just the begining. If you look at this link here: http://britishexpats.com/forum/showp...32&postcount=2 you'll get all the licencing authorites for each state so you can compare them. This is for sparkies.

The forum for Plumbers is here: http://britishexpats.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=119 ask some questions in there to find out about their licencing requirements as I'm not all that sure about them.

Hi, we're hoping to move to the mornington area, and I too am a nurse. I got a reply from Dr Spock, who informed me that a Registered Psychiatric Nurse (I know you're an RGN, so this will probably differ) would expect to earn approximately:
Grade 2 - $40000-$56000pa
Grade 3 - $57000-$62000pa
which roughly coverts to £18000-28000pa, alot less than you earn now I guess! When are you looking to move? Have you been there before? Mornington peninsula is gorgeous...

Hi there,
I am new to this site, but wanted to ask a question specific to this thread:

I want to work in Australia, specifically Melbourne, and am looking for a job that will also pay the airfare.
I am really having no luck with this whatsoever.

I have a degree in Outdoor Recreation, a teaching degree, and carpentry training. I also have a place to stay, at least to start, in Melbourne. I guess it isn't essential to live in that city...

To say the least, I'm really disappointed that I cant figure out something on my own.
If you have any contacts or can help in anyway, I would sure appreciate it.

chloe.
(ps. I'm actually Canadian)

There are companies offering this, and the company sponsering us are one of them. It is common in the mining industry and they may employ people with your degree as many mines provide recreation facilities. I would have a look at some of the big mines such as Olympic Dam

Hi there,
I'm an australian citizen, but have lived in the UK since I was a child and my husband and I have decided to make the move and head for Oz.

He currently works as a production/control room operater on a rig in the North Sea. Just wondering if anyone new what the wages are for this type of work in Australia and how easy it is to get a job. Also, we hear that mining is booming at the moment, would he be able to get a similar job doing that?

He's applied for a few but I think most companies require that you have a visa first. If anyone can offer any advice it would be much apreciated

Hi ya,

never been to mornington though seen pictures and yes i agree it looks lovely, i have friends there, also in croydon. hoping to get there in may time but doing some travelling first for a few weeks before we sttle or we may never do it !!
i read on one site that wages reflect on ur work xperience and years of work. not sure really, watching these Wanted down under programmes to be honest are making Oz look quite expensive to live in regards to food etc, whats ur views on it all .
when do u plan to go to mornington ?? have u got a job already. cant remember off hand.

Hi donna,

I'm thinking of moving out to Brisbane or around Brisbane Niovember this year.
I'm currently sorting out my visa and it all looks good for that date.

I'm a self-employed carpenter from Bristol and was wondering what sort of money a carpenter would get on the books with a company out there as i think it might be alot of effort going self-employed over there.

I've had a look at prices for renting but i need to know what the wages are like before i can set a buget and where the best place might be to find work.
Any information will be a great help esspecially about the gold coast area.

Thanks alot.Lee
