Default Median Wages in Australia

Not many official publications show the Australian Median wage, at least not since the 2002-03 figures that were published in 2006.

Those 2002-03 figures were:

2002-03 Median Annual Wage and Salary Income for Australia

All Australian Median wage, for all employees over 15 years of age = $32,697
The average wage figure for that period, issued by the ABS was: $37,632

Median Annual Wage and Salary Income Breakdown by age:
  • Age 15-24 $16,501
  • Age 25-34 $35,605
  • Age 35-44 $37,991
  • Age 45-54 $38,616
  • Age 55+ $34,410
Looking at the actual average wages for 2009...
All Employees, Full time, Part time and casual over 15 years of age - Actual average wages $47,970.

The Median wage may therefore be about $40,775, with age brackets as follows:
  • Age 15-24 All workers $20,577
  • Age 45-54 All workers $48,156

The actual Male Full Time average wage for May 2009, for all employees over 15 years of age was $ 70,038

The Median wage for that same month may therefore be about $59,532.
and some of the Median rates for age groups may be:
  • Age 15-24 Male $30,044
  • Age 45-54 Male $70,309

All 2009 figures approximated, but based on reasonable calculations.

($47,970/$37,632)^(1/(2009.5-2003.0))-1 = 3.80%. Is good.

($59,532/$32,697)^(1/(2009.5-2003.0))-1 = 9.66%. Is not good.

All those 15, 16 and 17 year olds, working part time after school, do bring the median figures down a lot don't they.
