also, after being in the UK and Europe for most of last year we were able to make our pound and Euro go much further on food and lodgings than you can over here in Oz.
I could buy some nail scissor in Tesco for 23p and they have lasted longer than the $8 cheap pair from Myers
I'm afraid personal experience wins out over government websites

I wasn't going to get involved, but I'm bored with studying (reading academic journals sucks donkey cock) so here is my very simplistic take on this.
For me overall COL is roughly similar with Australia a bit more expensive, To break it down to a basic level:
Consumables cheaper in the UK
Housing, Non-consumables and utilities roughly the same
Insurance and non-payroll taxes (rates, VAT) higher in the UK
All these make believe exchange rates of 2, 2.5, 3, 4 etc are mumbo Jumbo and irrelevant. All that matters is actual exchange rate and personal purchasing power (how long you need to work to buy something). PPP is different for all of us, but for me it is vastly better, by a huge margin, in Australia.

That's what we found, overall a little dearer in Australia, but not much.

To 'afford' a litre of diesel takes me about 50-odd secs here. Based on what I would be earning in the UK, it would take me just over 2mins
For a loaf of bread it would be slightly less in the UK

It is the cost of houses which makes the big difference

You make a fair point at last, the houses are dear, that's why I want the UK to come out of this long recession, so hopefully the exchange rate will go up and the housing market starts moving also, so I can sell my house and buy out right in Australia.

You are not going to sell one in Lancashire/Yorkshire and buy one in Perth for the same money

And how much are you on? Some jobs over here get paid stupid money for what the work is and likewise the same job can be a bit underpaid in the UK.
