Your actual TomTom unit, if it's new, undoubtedly has things like IQ Routes in it, which changes the way it'll send you according to traffic patterns, the time of day and the day of the week. I have a TomTom 720 in my car and Sygic Maps on the iPhone and have found them pretty similar.

Cheers Hutch that explains it, it's a 730.

* Its blazing fast due to its 600MHz processor
* Using the keyboard is a joy, nice feedback
* 5mp camera is decent in bright light, below average in low light
* Same goes for video
* Camera's LED light works as a torch also which is handy
* GPS signal lock is really fast, better than my Garmin Nuvi GPS device
* Loudspeaker is below average
* Battery life is really good
* Its got a compass and accelerometer which may come handy someday
* Decent front camera for video-calling
* Its got a tiny touch pad, good for scrolling up/down, focusing camera
* Feels solidly built and looks decent
* More stable than most smart-phones I used before
* Internet is quick
* It comes with blackberry-like push email built in, called Nokia Messaging which worked well for my gmail and hotmail

Some of the additional useful softwares I have downloaded/installed are:

* Google Maps - very nice, includes street view for Australia
* MetrO - public transport network routes for 400 cities worldwide
* Qik - for video sharing
* AnsMachine - customisable answering machine
* Simplified - for tracking my stock portfolio
* Handy Safe - for storing all my passwords
* MobileDialler - SIP client for internet calling
* Here and now - location sensitive information of interest
* Wellness diary - health info tracking
* Best dictaphone - conversation recording
* Call cheater - cheat the caller re your location!
* JoikuSpot - turn your E72 into a wifi hotspot
* Facebook - tailored for Nokia
* YouTube - it really works nicely
* OperaMini - a handy and economic brower
* Skyfire - another useful browser
* Fring - for Skype calling
* Palringo - combines all kinds of chats, facebook, skype, googletalk, yahoo and you name it.
* Movolo - for flight planning
* Finanz - good for loan/mortgage installment calculations
* Bloomberg - finance news and analysis

Good thing is that most of these softwares are either free or freely available!

Excellent info - thank you so much for that:thumbsup:

Is it difficult to get Facebook on the phone? I have 1gb of internet, how do you download facebook if its tailored for Nokia and Youtube etc. Ive never used my phone for internet before.:o

I was also looking for a nice leather case
for my E72 and have opted for the one that is made by Nokia itself, case model no. is CP-391. It gives adequate protection to the phone and looks classy too, though a bit pricy..... £15. PDAir black silicone cases are decent cheaper alternatives but they will not protect it agaist accidental drops.

There is link to Nokia's OVI store on the p
hone itself, on the Menu page. You will have most of the software here for free and they are all compatible with E72. Let me know if you have any difficulty installing.

The desktop is really good, although with the eeepc you have to really tinker with the settings to get it to go beyond the factory max settings. It's actually configurable upto 2048 x 2048 and there hasnt been a monitor built that can play that yet. I run it at it's max inbuilt settings at present, when Its connected to the TV.

I got the EEEPC as a cheap computer for my Daughter, she hasnt got along with it, mainly because she couldnt use MSoffice on it, and wouldnt go along with Open Office. I've bought her a windows comp for xmas, so will be using the Linux laptop as my Media streamer from this point on. It's not exactly user freindly if you want to get the best out of it.... trouble is it looks like it can do so much.

I doubt if there is one person on these boards that can change the settings to the max without referring to the instructions on how to do it..... Trouble is the little bugger is capable of doing it.

I managed to order one for a fiver from Ebay, its leather and the seller is in the UK, it came to ten dollars including delivery and looks exactly the same as one I saw on the net for 30 quid. Ill see what it looks like when I get it. Mr PP bought me a black leather wallet especially for the E72 which is fine anyway.

Now I am going to sound really thick, Ive got to transfer all the videos/data from my memory card to my new phone, I have one SIM card and a new sim card that vodafone sent me to replace my old one so Im keeping the same number.

The phones dont pick up one anothers bluetooth so Im tempted to transfer via my laptop but knowing me, I will probably infect with a virus my AV hasnt detected.

Can you recommend the best way to keep my phone from connecting to the internet, playing with it tonight it seems to connect easily - rather too easily.

Did that cost you a fortune with data roaming? Did you still have your Aus provider's sim in it? I'm off home shortly and that sounds like a good idea.

PP, this is a valid concern and I wish I knew the answer. I suspect some software connect to the internet in the background and you never know what personal information they are sharing with others. I guess you can reduce some risk by installing software from known and reliable sources/companies only. Also, go to the "settings" section of any software and turn off any "automatic updates". Many softwares will give you options for connection to internet accesspoint such "connect automatically", "this session only" or "always ask" etc. and obviously I would mostly choose the last option. Hope it helps to some extent.

If you already have the maps you don't need to download anything - obviously you pay upfront though - the TomTom western Europe app is $170.

With 3 data roaming on the UK 3 network is a pretty reasonable $0.50/Mb - not sure about other networks.

Well my new sim card is being activated now, Im keeping the same number but my old one is a bit tatty.

I wonder how much of your allowance the automatic updates take up? Oh god, I have purchased and internet hungry monster with an insatiable appetite for updates.

Its a nice phone though....:o

I've just downloaded the Kindle application for my iPhone and received my first book sample (Amazon.com/uk). It's pretty good actually....

I was looking at a review for Sygic on Cnet....it got a good score but they said the GPS performance in the city was poor, fine outside the city - I guess you'd have experience of both - how have you found it? Tom Tom for iPhone gets a pretty terrible review, poor GPS performance in the city and the burbs - is this more the iPhone's problem or the app?

Nope not at all. Dont use maps, get a Sat Nav app from the ap store. I have Navmii, the UK and Ireland maps. Works very well with fast lock on, voice directions and speed camera warnings and it just is the software and uses your GPS in the phone. No data connection needed.

I keep data roaming firmly turned off when overseas. Telstra would take my house, my dog and enslave the next several generations of my family if I used 10kb to check my mail whilst away !

Yea you're absolutely right - it's largely down to the phone itself. I've had no problems at all - in fact lock-in in the CBD with sky scrapers all around is far quicker than my actual TomTom GPS unit. Only issue I've had is the occasional lapse of road integrity, when it thinks you're on a road next to the one you're actually on and re-routes you accordingly. Soon snaps back to the right road of course, but is a bit odd. The Sygic app has all the features I need - lane guidance, favourites etc and since I already owned a TomTom I'm glad I took the chance and tried someone else's road navigation software.
