How does that work out cheaper Hutch.

Reason I ask, is with 3, you can now get an 8gig Iphone on the same plan we are on for 49 dollars per month.... a 16 gig one costs 5 dollars per month extra... a 32gig one 10bucks per month.

It works out cheaper because you're not locked into a contract for 24 months - you can pick and choose whichever provider you want to be with. I mean, one way or the other the mobile phone companies are going to get you to pay for the phone. How could they not? Whether it's in the upfront costs, the monthly fee or the extra you inevitably pay over and above your cap - you always end up paying in full.

Also there's nothing worse than being 12 months into a contract and some killer new phone comes along, but you can't get it because you've still got a year on your contract. I mean, Apple are guaranteed to bring out a better iPhone long before 24 months is up. Or the Android 2.0 phones might turn out to be the dog's bollocks. If that happens I just sell my lovely unlocked iPhone and buy a new phone. No ties, no contract.

My 32Gb 3GS cost me a couple of bucks over a grand at the Apple store. At the moment I'm using a Telstra sim, but Voda's network out here has radically improved lately and I'll probably switch to them because I get far more data.

See above. I don't have to think in 24 month time-frames - that's for people locked into a contract. I mean, have you checked the second hand value of iPhones? I could sell it a year from now for $700 and get myself the latest phone. If you do manage to find a deal that puts you marginally ahead financially you still pay the cost of being locked in.

Yes I hear you, actually read more like ;) Although we've been on that 49 dollar plan for ages now..(we were Orange customers that stayed on). we also have a 29 dollar plan with them, and have gone beyond the contract time a few times. Cant seem to find a plan that suits our uses better than 3.

The only alternative plan I would consider and it's actually to expensive for me really is TPG's unlmited call to all Aus landlines and Aus mobiles and SMS plan @ 79 Dollars per month plus 2 gigs of Data. (although my Daughter has gone beyond her cap and snuck up to those levels at times, and I'm considering it as an insurance policy almost)

Whenever we now get close to the limit on our 3 plans we switch over to our Pennytel Call back feature which all 4 of our mobiles are linked to. (the two others are on Lebara sims and we use Pennytel ANI 100 pct on those)

If I could buy a Iphone and run it purely on a Data Sim (using voip over 3g) then I would seriously consider buying it outright. I'm hoping in two years that will be the Norm.... It is starting now.

FYI I actually have my 15 year old Daughter on the 49 buck plan, she is the one that uses Mobiles the most..... I gave her my phone about 4 years back... I tend to leave my Lebara at home accidently on purpose as the only calls I get are for errands ;)

If I do manage to get my hands on a Iphone eventually, I will probably start using the BBS at work during lunch breaks etc.

For us it's usually connectivity that determines who we go with. We used to be with 3, but could only make phone calls while standing on the bed in the back bedroom. :D

Believe it or not I get by on 150Mb of data per month! One of the many things that the iPhone does brilliantly is seamlessly connecting to wireless networks. So when I'm at home it automatically connects to my Belkin Router and uses that connection and when I'm at work it connects to that network. Similarly when I'm round at friends or my parents it connects to their networks. The only time it really needs to use the 3G connection is when I'm on the road and my data needs at those times are typically quite low - the odd location blip back to Google Latitude or a small download via Google Maps.

I just use the Skype app on the iPhone whenever I'm in range of wi-fi, which is most of the time.

Yea, it's hard to tell how things will turn out. Who'd have thought that full blown mobile Internet applications would come to fruition so soon? I was never a big fan of Facebook, but I find myself using it increasingly because the iPhone facebook app is so mind-bogglingly useful. For instance, the other day it was my son's year two end of year award ceremony. I videoed him receiving his certificate on my iPhone and had uploaded it to my Facebook page before the next kid had sat down. Truly amazing.

Indeed. Dragon have just launched voice dictation for the iPhone which means you won't even have to type.

N97, sucks breaks down every week.

Someone at work said the Nokia N97 is good, I have an N95 which has been brilliant.

Basically I like taking photos/videos, picture messaging, video calls but really like all the applications on the iPhone.

What have you found to be good in the way of mobiles, I would like to be able to store notes as well.

Yeah thats what I had heard.

Ive ordered the Nokia E72 - looks like a Blackberry, read up on the reviews - it got 9/10 and overall did very well, plus a colleague at work has two mates that have one and they get on with it.

Must say though, my Nokia N95 has been a marvellous phone and it takes excellent photos.

Did it fall apart at any time ? Thats the feedback I got back on my London Board, apparently most are held together with tape

Nope, never been repaired and never had any problems with it either.

Sad fact but Nokia's software on their phones is really just so poor, the n95 great days are gone, the n96, n900 are really not that good either, I hope your phone does not start crashing three months after you bought it and have to take out the battery every other day etc.

Ive heard about the N97 crashing but the only thing Ive heard about the E72 is that the applications are nothing like the iPhone.

But the reviews from my colleagues that have the iphone are not favourable, many have changed already.

I guess it depends what you want it for.

I have a N97 and it is a good phone but not a great phone the latest firmware has improved the phone imensly and the crashing has stopped I considered the iphone too but there were certain issues that just drove me away I think if I had my time again I would go for the HTC Hero, or a Palm Pre

Re: iPhone, Nokia N97 - what else?

Iphone 3GS here. Simply nothing else that touches it. Have been a Nokia fan most of my life and my iphone replaces my N97. The N97 is, to my mind, years behind the iphone in terms of ease of use, quality of build, technology, support, apps and all round usability.

Got mine from Telstra on a 2 year contract. Mainly because I prefer the Telstra coverage, call quality and so on. Took an additional 1 year warranty with them for $79 and they sub you the 3GS for $500 which is half the price of buying outright. That way I'm covered for the life of the contract.

I usually do just buy an unlocked phone but since I'm not going to use it outside the Telstra network the additional cost just didnt add up. I got back from London yesterday and the feature which turns off data roaming meant I could still use my phone and just caught up with emails, facebook etc when in range of wireless networks and hotspots.

For my money, get an iphone. You will not regret it.

There was a time when I would only have a Nokia, and a lot of my (much more techy) friends were the same; those days are long gone. Mix of iPhones and HTCs these days, I think.

The Geek has a Blackberry Curve 8520 for work (says the BB Bold 9700 is the latest to get) and an iPhone for play.

Sounds like my Nokia N73....what a lemon that was!

For me the moral of the story is don't be one of the first to get the phone because invariably there will be plenty of bugs, either as standard or with your networks tinkering of the software to be ironed out.

Sound advice. My O2 mini was fabulous; my O2 XDA Atom was a dog, even after a replacement motherboard.

You see I like the look of an iPhone but I really dont get on with the touch screen, I love the keyboard on the nokia and Blackberry.

One of my work mates has a Blackberry and he prefers it to the iPhone - he used to have one of those.
