Question are they exactly the same as Iphones without the phone part ?

Cos if they are, I will explore it inside out.

Touch is much slimmer than iPhone , got 11 yr old son a 32 gb for birthday, he was disgusted at first & thought it was crap, until I installed facebook, email, movies & music vids & loads of cool games he now loves it.
You do need wifi to get the best out of though.

Only an 8gig'er but discounted through Auspost for employees.

I've got Wifi, so should be good for him.

He wont be taking it to school though.

So if you have wifi at home, you can download to the ipod touch as part of your monthly download allowance?

:)

Yehp you can do that with any device that has Wifi.

We download from this site to our Linux laptop and then into our big tv.... You dont need foxtel when you can stream for free via this site.

YouTou can turn battery useage in and it shows % in top right corner or there's a bigger free battery useage app for free.

I have a love/hate relationship with my iPhone. It doesn't hold charge well, doesn't warn me when it's getting low on battery, and the call quality is not that great. However, if you want an iPhone in the US, you are almost* certainly locked into using AT&T as your provider, and they have really crappy coverage. Even in tech-crazed Austin there are loads of dead spots and the network is oversubscribed - AT&T doesn't have the infrastructure to handle all the iPhone users.

Personally I want to divorce my telephone from any "smart device" - I'd be best off with some sort of pocket PC and a good solid phone with a small screen and big buttons the way phones were originally made.

*there are ways around the lock to AT&T but they are never guaranteed - they are hacks.

Of course you could just have the tom tom app (or any sat nav app) on your iphone instead. Worth knowing about. I put a satnav for London on my iphone and when I arrived back there, hey presto off and going in the hire car in 1 min.

I have 8 months left of my contract and Vodafone have decided to waive the fee and send me a new phone right away, it means another contract but I cant afford to buy outright so hey ho.

Should get my phone next week.

I have been using my Nokia E72 for three weeks now and am perfectly happy with it. Here's some of my observations:

* Its blazing fast due to its 600MHz processor
* Using the keyboard is a joy, nice feedback
* 5mp camera is decent in bright light, below average in low light
* Same goes for video
* Camera's LED light works as a torch also which is handy
* GPS signal lock is really fast, better than my Garmin Nuvi GPS device
* Loudspeaker is below average
* Battery life is really good
* Its got a compass and accelerometer which may come handy someday
* Decent front camera for video-calling
* Its got a tiny touch pad, good for scrolling up/down, focusing camera
* Feels solidly built and looks decent
* More stable than most smart-phones I used before
* Internet is quick
* It comes with blackberry-like push email built in, called Nokia Messaging which worked well for my gmail and hotmail

Some of the additional useful softwares I have downloaded/installed are:

* Google Maps - very nice, includes street view for Australia
* MetrO - public transport network routes for 400 cities worldwide
* Qik - for video sharing
* AnsMachine - customisable answering machine
* Simplified - for tracking my stock portfolio
* Handy Safe - for storing all my passwords
* MobileDialler - SIP client for internet calling
* Here and now - location sensitive information of interest
* Wellness diary - health info tracking
* Best dictaphone - conversation recording
* Call cheater - cheat the caller re your location!
* JoikuSpot - turn your E72 into a wifi hotspot
* Facebook - tailored for Nokia
* YouTube - it really works nicely
* OperaMini - a handy and economic brower
* Skyfire - another useful browser
* Fring - for Skype calling
* Palringo - combines all kinds of chats, facebook, skype, googletalk, yahoo and you name it.
* Movolo - for flight planning
* Finanz - good for loan/mortgage installment calculations
* Bloomberg - finance news and analysis

Good thing is that most of these softwares are either free or freely available!

I've got tomtom on my iPhone but needed a stand alone gps with lane guidance as I've just started a truck business around Sydney, & it's a business expense.
If I put same address in iPhone & tomtom I often get different routes & wildly different route times.
You can't have too many gadgets!

Re: iPhone, Nokia N97 - what else?

I'm getting a T-Mobile Touch for Christmas. Android phone with all the usual, but was effectively being given away by T-Mobile for £91 (A$164) a few weeks back. Hacked, cracked and unlocked seven ways from hell it should be possible to get this to work on any Aus network AND run Google Navigator.

And when an even better Android phone comes out that's worth the upgrade, I won't have wasted a large wodge of cash.

Your actual TomTom unit, if it's new, undoubtedly has things like IQ Routes in it, which changes the way it'll send you according to traffic patterns, the time of day and the day of the week. I have a TomTom 720 in my car and Sygic Maps on the iPhone and have found them pretty similar.

.

Lol I let my Daughter run the movies I barely watch them... She told me Watchmovies.com.... when I posted it I realised I had better check... then I had a horrible realisation that it must have been the wrong site, as I'd seen her search for movies in front of me. I tested it out by naming a few movies that I thought wouldnt be on there and they all were.

So I was dead chuffed when she finally got home and told me the correct site.

What does the linux desktop look like on your big TV? I have been toying with buying a big TV, but want one that will be good for games and desktop use.

TVs have changed radiaclly since I last bought one, and I'm not really sure what I need. Plasma? LED? LCD? There are some reasonable deals around with a free Xbox 360, so I was planning to snaffle one of those...
