The other problem is that if you leave the rental property supply to the government they will make a right pigs ear of it. And they would dole out the best properties to their pinko commie mates.

Negative gearing will not end here, the unintended consquences would be quite horrific with a lot of families threatened with eviction. Unlike the UK the council housing system here is vitually non existant - the government uses negative gearing to get the private sector to provide affordable rentals, if you stop that the government would have to ramp up it's council house program almost overnight. This along with a complete crash of the housing market.

Negative gearing can only be tackled post crash. I disagree that there would be less investment in housing without it. There would be a shock if it were removed at the wrong time but housing investment would be on a more sustainable basis without it.

Its also a way of providing help to another type of self funded retiree, not everyone likes to invest all of their money in super, even when helped with cash incentives from the government....

Negative gearing is a great success if you manage to get on the property market in the first place, as for rents, I often wonder how most people manage, both of us working full-time, two kids. I dont find the rent particularly cheap.

However the magnificient thing about it all becoming so expensive here, is hubby is grumbling like mad, and dropping comments about returning to the u.k, so pleas australia , let your rents, houseprices, cost of living continue to rise and i could have me fat arse back in Scotland soon!

Do you think super and property are the only things to invest money in?, if you are Australian then yes you probably do.

Were not Australian and we are well aware that there are many options for investment. Were happy with our choices but always keep our options open. That said property has been a fantastic investment to us throughout our lives as we have always added capital value and sold at a profit.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some people seem to find it attractive and that's their prerogative.
