I agree

I think there should be a thread on this every week, It winds so many people up, I love the way some people climb off their crosses to preach about it.

The best reply I ever saw was in huge coloured letters "pay up you mongrel"

My own take on this is it is everyones own choice and they have to live with themselves. I often wonder if the ones who shout loudest haven't perhaps done something similar in the past. It's a bit like people who have stopped smoking/drinking etc they are always the ones who then preach about how bad it is for you.

The bottom line is does anybody know anyone who was forced to pay a UK debt from Australia. Not I know a friend of a friend thing we have all heard those stories. I know one thing for sure if you do leave debt you will be in big trouble if you do decide to go back to the UK.

Come on. Surely the best posts are the ones in OZ who say, "We dont want you in this country" followed by the ones in Blighty who say "Your not welcome here!"

I wonder if any of them have ever drink drove, or driven fast through a built up area, or got a little something for nothing occasionally!?

This issue is one that its fine to seek advice but keep your decision to yourself, lest we forget what someone once PM'd me, there are some officials who read this forum.

I have cited a couple of incidents before about friends who have been chased in other countries for money. In my experience it is the likes of Mastercard and Visa et all who hunt the hardest.

Absolutely! I was just making a loose point.

By the way the rapist or kiddie fiddling issue comes under the jurisdiction of criminal law i believe, not civil.

Of course; my point was about the tax stuff, not the other bit...

I have to agree with you.

It's like some people think they are the moral police of BE.

And it sadly is true that you can't give a true answer on this or you will be hounded out for it.

I would love to know what someone PM'd you about :D

I kept my internet bank account in the UK open and used this pay my credit card debts in the UK, minimum balance until I was set up with a job etc then paid off the debts in the UK no problems doing that all it was easy in fact. Didn't make any difference when I was applying for loans or credit cards over here either.

Just a thought...........when most people open their bank account one of the ID's required is your passport. So you set up direct debits on your bank account to pay your credit card. So therefore your credit card company could contact your bank get your passport number, track you down then get a debt management company in that particular company to chase you up. Personally it is not worth the risk of leaving debt behind in the UK.

Sounds like you own the place or something. I choose where I want to go and when, thank you very much. I have a credit card debt in the UK, which I am now paying off from Oz, penny by penny, bank transfers / exchange rates included. I chose to leave BEFORE the debt was paid, because it would have taken me another year and I did not want to be seperated from my partner another 12 months. It will probably all be paid off 2 years from now.
Very deceitful and selfish of me, huh.

I'm quote sure the poster wasn't refering to people who move away and decide never to pay the debt off. I'm pretty sure most people would have no problem with someone who moved to a different country and continued to pay off the debt they left behind them.

Re: debt in uk

this has been covered many many times.............i think the general gist is, no-one on here has been collered by overseas collections agents/baillifs for debts left behind in the uk, as there is no agreement between UK and australia (i understand there is for other countries such as canada). according to one post on this thread, an agreement may kick in in 2008.

as for the 'bowler hat', as my hubbie calls the tax man, this would be included as well. they too would have difficulty collecting monies due to no agreement.

it is up to you as a person whether you want to carry that burden and be looking over your shoulder. we thought we had made a tidy profit on our house in the uk, but, we paid off all our debts (which were more than we thought :( ), and so had less finances for australia than we planned on having.
