There was a really good thread on this a while back. I think it was decided that it would be a nightmare to pay them off from OZ, if you could pay them then do and hopefully its not with one of the companies that trade or have partnerships in OZ, otherwise they may chase the debt. Try doing the thread search, it was interesting. |

Re: debt in uk
why would anyone not pay what they owe ?and also for all those that are coming here most by and large will settle well into australian life but the few that dont will feel like they have to stay if they have a bad credit history in the uk.
Its only a matter of time before the banks etc get their act together and it wont be long with the likes of bush, blair and howard running the show that it will be made legal to run credit searches on citizens and PRs in other countries . |

Debt does not travel with you... credit ratings are not transferable, but if you leave your debt and do not pay it off, you can land in big trouble. Not only that, but you spend years looking over your shoulder waiting for someone to turn up and nab you. It's not worth the hassle. Pay it off and leave on good terms. You just never know if you might need to go back suddenly or Aus might not be the right place for you... If you're coming here for a fresh start, make it so, not a slightly grubby one. |

Re: debt in uk
BTW its not a nightmare to have to pay them off from here. Use a company like tranzfers to move money from your Aus account to your UK account, and then pay everything with internet banking. :)

The only reason i say that is because of the exchange rate. |

Has anyone had any experience coming to a settlement figure on credit card debt.for example if i owe £10,000 would they except a 'take it or leave it' settlement of £5,000 ?Would this have any effect on your credit rating in here or in Aus ?
Any info greatly appreciated :D lee |

I had an overdraft in the Uk which I tried paying off while in oz. Due to the exchange rate it was an absolute nightmare. I never had enough money no matter how many extra shifts I did and the financial side of life in Oz definately contributed to me returning back to the UK. Please don't put yourself in the same position as I did. Debt just sits there like a bad smell and believe me no matter how hard you try to forget about it - it's always there, waiting to catch up with you! Start your new life in Oz debt free, free from worry and financial commitments back in the Uk. It's the LAST thing you need if you want to give yourself a decent start in a new country. *Pearly* |

Anyway this query was for 'a friend' ;) Whilst I'm not here to judge [that's for you to do based on your own values] I can't understand why anyone would want to borrow money based on their spending...and then not feel it was their responsibility to pay it back:confused: A "take it or leave it" attitude sounds like you are doing someone a favour when actually you have spent it....so you owe it......don't you:confused: |

I'm not here to shit stir (contrary to what it may look like), I just cannot see why you would say what you have so far. And, FWIW, I agree with others who have said that sending back dollars to pay off debts in UK can be very painful. Admittedly tho it's better than the days of $2.9 to the £. It is alot easier to get cash in Oz than in the UK (for mortages etc), but also a lot easier for the bank to reposses. Missed ONE payment? Automatic breach of contract - bank wins. Kerching. (Expose on 60 mins earlier this year.) |

Any info greatly appreciated :D lee I think that the only way you could do this is by applying for personal bankruptcy that way they have to accept a settlement, otherwise I'm pretty sure that their attitude is, " you spent it, you pay it" From what i understand if there hasn't been a court case or judgement against you they will find it hard to recoup their money from OZ, if however there has been then they have the right to pursue it anywhere. Just to note, if its the credit card company then they are bound to have either partners in OZ or are trading out there, in which case, the second you apply for a mortgage, or even a phone they will know! Another note about the personal bankruptcy is that while it only lasts a very short time the myth that your clear after it is just that, a myth. They may well keep coming after you 'till they get whats owed. I stress the word MAY. |

I have to say that while I'm not endorsing the attitude of running away from stuff there are a lot of people who simply cannot pay back money to unscrupulous credit companies, and i agree, they deserve everything they get. Have no sympathy for them please, they use filthy tactics all the time to trap and steal. As the song goes. "Sympathy for the devil" |

Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste I've been around for a long, long year Stole many a man's soul and faith And I was 'round when Jesus Christ Had his moment of doubt and pain Made damn sure that Pilate Washed his hands and sealed his fate Pleased to meet you Hope you guess my name But what's puzzling you Is the nature of my game I stuck around at St. Petersburg When I saw it was a-time for a change Killed the czar and his ministers Anastasia screamed in vain I rode a tank Held a general's rank When the blitzkrieg raged And the bodies stank Pleased to meet you Hope you guess my name, oh yeah Ah, what's puzzling you Is the nature of my game, ah yeah (whoo whoo, whoo whoo) I watched with glee While your kings and queens (whoo whoo) Fought for ten decades (whoo whoo) For the gods they made (whoo whoo) I shouted out, (whoo whoo) "Who killed the Kennedys?" (whoo whoo) When after all (whoo whoo) It was you and me (whoo whoo) Let me please introduce myself (whoo whoo) I'm a man of wealth and taste (whoo whoo) And I laid traps for troubadours (whoo whoo) Who get killed before they reached Bombay (whoo whoo, whoo whoo) Pleased to meet you (whoo whoo) Hope you guessed my name, (whoo whoo) oh yeah (whoo whoo) But what's puzzling you (whoo whoo) Is the nature of my game(whoo whoo), oh yeah, get down, baby (whoo whoo) (whoo whoo, whoo whoo) (whoo whoo) (whoo whoo) (whoo whoo) .......... Pleased to meet you (whoo whoo) Hope you guessed my name, (whoo whoo) oh yeah (whoo whoo) But what's confusing you (whoo whoo) Is just the nature of my game (whoo whoo) um yeah (whoo whoo) Just as every cop is a criminal (whoo whoo) And all the sinners saints (whoo whoo) As heads is tails (whoo whoo) Just call me Lucifer (whoo whoo) 'Cause I'm in need of some restraint (whoo whoo) So if you meet me (whoo whoo) Have some courtesy (whoo whoo) Have some sympathy, (whoo whoo) and some taste (whoo whoo) Use all your well-learned politesse (whoo whoo) Or I'll lay your(whoo whoo) soul to waste,(whoo whoo), um yeah (whoo whoo) Pleased to meet you (whoo whoo) Hope you guessed my name, (whoo whoo) um yeah (whoo, whoo) But what's puzzling you (whoo whoo) Is the nature of my game, (whoo whoo) um mean it, (whoo whoo) get down Hope that helps! Probably one of the best songs they ever did, that and Mothers little helper. |
Re: debt in uk
Just thought I'd post to say that there are people in the UK who are in a shit state, with kids and just one wage to support the family.
Money used from credit cards is often used to buy food shopping, as the monthly wage is often just enough for the mortgage and bills and transport money. Credit cards are becoming more and more of a neccessity than used for luxury holidays, fur coats and to put behind the bar for a night out. Some people scam the government by saying they have split up so th woman doesn't have to worry about the mortgage and the husband secretly lives there, and they get benefits because of the lie told. Lots of people with credit cards are just trying to live the truthful way, by not scamming th government, and really just want a better life for themselves and their children. With extortionate charges I have alot of sympathy for people like this. They are just trying to survive, and look for a better life, as many of you have realised, the UK (London particularly) has a shit standard of living. stuckinblighty, good on you for asking. |
