You certainly can...
Out of all of the places I have looked at Adelaide offers more of what we are after. The larger cities are too expensive, the Gold Coast looks good but is too glitzy if you know what I mean... Adelaide offers a fairly relaxed environment if a little 'ordinary' - but Kendal is hardly the centre of the universe is it!! Note these are observations done from afar and we would certainly look at doing a recce before committing ourselves - it would be a big stuff up if we didn't like it once we got there!! Richard |

Hi there :D
Just wondered if there were any other Cumbrians making the move down under? Would be nice to speak to some local people, maybe even arrange a meet????????????????? I am 24 and my hubby Barrie is 25, we have a 1 year old daughter and a dog!!!! My mam (47 - she will kill me for putting that on) and stepdad (43) are also applying. We sent our visa app in November and we are just waiting for a Case Officer. They seem to be getting through them a bit faster now so with a bit of luck we will be there Sept/Oct. We are hoping to go to the Mandurah area. Would love to hear from anyone from either end!!! Hayley  we're in Cockermouth. House on the market and ready to go as soon as possible. In fact, problems we may have in shipping our dog means that we're pretty keen to get things moving quickly..........but someones gotta buy the house!! We're off to Sydney......me, wife, 2 kids and dog........ Cheers |

2 mins up the road!!!
There does seem to be a lot of visa companies about. We had quotes from a couple of firms but then decided to do it all ourselves. It was hard at times to get motivated to fill all the forms in but its a hell of a lot cheaper! We had a quote for £4000 but doing it ourselves, it has cost £1400 ish thats with paying for medicals as well. I keep wondering whether we are doing the right thing, i keep thinking will my 1 year old grow up and hate us for taking her away from the rest of her family but I would rather try it and fail that not try and think "what if" all our life!! How old are you? What is your trade? Hayley x We run a building company, my husband specializes in Roofing & Plastering but with our employees we do just about everything, also looking into asbestos removals at the mo and very nearly got our licence, hoping we might be able to use this if we get out to aus. I am 30 and OH (chris) is 41 (old cradle snatching git!:D ) I understand what you are saying about the kids, I spoke to my family about our plans at the weekend and everyone burst out crying, it kind of makes you realise that it doesnt just affect you but the whole family! We really dont know whether it will happen at this moment in time but are very serious about looking into it, there are so many things to consider especially where abouts do you pick to settle out there, I suppose its where the work is, but how do you know?? Any help from you or any other cumbrians(or anyone) is much appreciated:thumbup: Melissa |

I know that in that area, they are crying out for all tradesmen and the daily papers are full of jobs. He is thinking of working for someone for a year or 2 to get to know how they do things over there and then going self employed. If your hubby has all the skills of tradesmen and will be the main applicant, he will have to apply before he turns 45. He will need to get his skills assessed and have a positive reply before he lodges the main application (just something to be thinking about). Hayley x |
Re: Cumbria to Perth
Just reading the local paper today and we have Aussies from over east having to go back because they can't find rental accommodation in Perth! Try and sort somewhere to live before you arrive if at all possible if you're coming to Perth

Yehh, we thought as much, we have just signed up for an assessment and then will take it from there, I would imagine the whole process will take about year, does that sound about right? We know that his time is running out so are trying to get it sorted as soon as house, the house is already on the market so if that sells sooner we will rent some where for a while.
I noticed you are gonna take your dog, how much does that cost? we have a border collie and I would hate to leave her behind. :) I think it costs about £1500 to get a dog over, more or less depending on the size. Its all the injections before hand, some of them need a few injections so if you are taking it, I would speak to the vet asap and start the ball rolling. Just something else to batter your head in!! Teabag - Thanks for the advice I will definately try to find something before we come. It must crazy overthere!!!! |
Re: Cumbria to Perth
I'm from Melbourne but my wife is Scottish and we live in Scotland (SW) at the moment. Carlisle is a regular stopping point for shopping at the weekend and we are just back from another week's hols in south Lakeland - at Grange over Sands which is a terrific base for the Lake District, South Lakeland and Yorkshire Dales. Kirkby Lonsdale is a favourite place of our's with a run over the hills to Dent and up to Sedburgh to finish off. A stunningly beautiful part of the world Cumbria!

Hi, have you got your visa? How long did it take?
We are taking our dog too, she is a staffy. Which company are you using, it seems to cost the earth to take pets! Not that I could even think about leaving her here!!!! Hayley Mind you, this is my 2nd time through all this....I got a skilled independant visa (can't remember the sub-class number, but can get the old passport and tell ou if you need to know) granted back in 1999 and that only took about 8-12 weeks from start to finish too. But I had to let that lapse because of a bereavement and me and my, then girlfriend, came back to the UK. As for the dog.......we're in a bit of a mess at the minute because we have an English Bulldog who can only be carried by Japanese Airlines. However, because of a recent fatality, JAL are thinking of banning English Bulldogs. The same applies to Pugs and some Staffies I think. We only found out about this over the weekend by discovering another thread on here. I was going to try and copy a link to the thread but I'm not much of an IT Whizz. The thread is called something like "This little terror ma just stop us going" or something like that. I think you should be OK with the Staffie but it'd be best to read the thread and then get advice off shippers. We've been quoted £2.3k by Airpets and £1.8k by Ryslip. Spoke to Airpets this-morning about the JAL ban and they've said it's not a question of 'if' but 'when' the ban comes in. They've said they they could get our bully out to Oz in 3-4 weeks at a push.....but we haven't sold the house and so can't just send her. What if it took another 6 months to sell the house and she'd be in quarantine in Sydney (and it'd be costing us $800-1000/month). Sorry for the long response...hope some of it helps. |

I've got a Spouse Visa so the 'timescales' discussion is a bit of a non-starter 'cause they're in a league of their own compared to the other types of visa. My application took 4-6 weeks (can't quite remember) from start to finish and that was without front-loading the medicals. Our girls didn't need to apply for visas 'cause they automatically were entitled to Citizenship By Descent because of my wife. They've got their aussie passports already.

Kirby Lonsdale one of my faves too. Not a Cumbrian I am from just over the border in North Lancashire but spent many a sunday at Devils Bridge and I still get my kids shoes mailed to me from the MIL who regularly shops in Kendal. My huaband served his time in Barrow at VSEL.
Where abouts are you in Perth, how long you been there? HAyley |
