Cumbria to Perth
Hi there :D
Just wondered if there were any other Cumbrians making the move down under? Would be nice to speak to some local people, maybe even arrange a meet????????????????? I am 24 and my hubby Barrie is 25, we have a 1 year old daughter and a dog!!!! My mam (47 - she will kill me for putting that on) and stepdad (43) are also applying. We sent our visa app in November and we are just waiting for a Case Officer. They seem to be getting through them a bit faster now so with a bit of luck we will be there Sept/Oct. We are hoping to go to the Mandurah area. Would love to hear from anyone from either end!!! Hayley  |

Re: Cumbria to Perth
Hi Richard
I will try and tactfully say why I want to leave Oz because last time I did It didn't go too well :p I grew up in Brisvegas and life was pretty sweet except for the humidity so when my hubby suggested we move to Perth to be near his family I though great, a nice change of climate, a chance to start fresh, etc. closer to family. Family life didn't work out and basically it's just Me, Hubby and the 2 kidlets alone in Perth, have made some good friends, the best of them being the Pom's  Anyway my Neighbour went back to the UK for 3 months over Xmas and has decided she will go back next year permanently, well this put idea's into our tiny little brains, so we thought 'us too!!' Hubby was born in UK so he and kids can get British passports and I will get Wifey Visa. Also we want to see the world and I really do not cope at all with the heat or the bugs so am practically a hermit during summer, then in Winter it just rains all the time anyway, so am hoping I will have a bit more life in me in a cooler climate. Can I ask why Adelaide? My husband grew up in Adelaide, it's not the best choice 'duck's and cover's from the flaming about to receive" |

Its a bit scary just hope that we are doing the right thing and the company we use is ok, there are sooo many out there and we havent really got a clue where to begin with the whole process. There does seem to be a lot of visa companies about. We had quotes from a couple of firms but then decided to do it all ourselves. It was hard at times to get motivated to fill all the forms in but its a hell of a lot cheaper! We had a quote for £4000 but doing it ourselves, it has cost £1400 ish thats with paying for medicals as well. I keep wondering whether we are doing the right thing, i keep thinking will my 1 year old grow up and hate us for taking her away from the rest of her family but I would rather try it and fail that not try and think "what if" all our life!! How old are you? What is your trade? Hayley x |

If you are looking at somewhere like Kendal the place is made up of either accountant firms or builders so you should be sorted for work. The economy is always buoyant due to tourism. Why you leaving Oz? We are in Kendal but want to go to Adelaide...

Hi Hayley
Quickly responding from your other thread, sorry my friends don't know Angela or her family, I hope you manage to find her though. We've already met then...did I do your engagement at the British Legion? Oh and my hubby's called Andy. Hi Hils..hows things? you made it then...we never did manage that coffee, lol. We lived in West Cumbria in Seascale, St Bees, Gosforth, Whitehaven, Moor Row, Lowca, Moresby & Bowthorn. Not all at the same time..though:ohmy: Teabag, you will love Cumbria if... You like it cold... You like it wet... You love tractors...Oh how I miss the smell of manure in the morning!! You can understand any of us...Oo's it garn marra? Joking aside ..it is a very beautiful place of the world, I think 'Miss Potter' was filmed a few miles from where we used to live. I always felt confident the kids were being brought up in a safe environment but I found employment pretty scarce...can anyone remember when Morrisons opened in Whitehaven? Weren't there about 1000 applicants just for the checkout cashiers or something ridiculous. We love Cumbria but on the other side of the world..lol |

Good luck with your application:thumbup: My mam is panicing now though. Wonder if anyone can help? She is 47 and doesnt this she will be acccepted. She is on a Skilled Independant Visa with her hubby (my stepdad) as the main applicant as he is a painter/decorator and he is only 43. She thinks that neither of them will get in as she is over the 45 year cut off age. Any info from anyone who knows about this situation? Hayley x |

The larger cities are too expensive, the Gold Coast looks good but is too glitzy if you know what I mean... Adelaide offers a fairly relaxed environment if a little 'ordinary' - but Kendal is hardly the centre of the universe is it!! Note these are observations done from afar and we would certainly look at doing a recce before committing ourselves - it would be a big stuff up if we didn't like it once we got there!! Richard |

I know that in that area, they are crying out for all tradesmen and the daily papers are full of jobs. He is thinking of working for someone for a year or 2 to get to know how they do things over there and then going self employed. If your hubby has all the skills of tradesmen and will be the main applicant, he will have to apply before he turns 45. He will need to get his skills assessed and have a positive reply before he lodges the main application (just something to be thinking about). Hayley x |
Re: Cumbria to Perth
Just reading the local paper today and we have Aussies from over east having to go back because they can't find rental accommodation in Perth! Try and sort somewhere to live before you arrive if at all possible if you're coming to Perth

I noticed you are gonna take your dog, how much does that cost? we have a border collie and I would hate to leave her behind. :) I think it costs about £1500 to get a dog over, more or less depending on the size. Its all the injections before hand, some of them need a few injections so if you are taking it, I would speak to the vet asap and start the ball rolling. Just something else to batter your head in!! Teabag - Thanks for the advice I will definately try to find something before we come. It must crazy overthere!!!! |
Re: Cumbria to Perth
I'm from Melbourne but my wife is Scottish and we live in Scotland (SW) at the moment. Carlisle is a regular stopping point for shopping at the weekend and we are just back from another week's hols in south Lakeland - at Grange over Sands which is a terrific base for the Lake District, South Lakeland and Yorkshire Dales. Kirkby Lonsdale is a favourite place of our's with a run over the hills to Dent and up to Sedburgh to finish off. A stunningly beautiful part of the world Cumbria!

We are taking our dog too, she is a staffy. Which company are you using, it seems to cost the earth to take pets! Not that I could even think about leaving her here!!!! Hayley Mind you, this is my 2nd time through all this....I got a skilled independant visa (can't remember the sub-class number, but can get the old passport and tell ou if you need to know) granted back in 1999 and that only took about 8-12 weeks from start to finish too. But I had to let that lapse because of a bereavement and me and my, then girlfriend, came back to the UK. As for the dog.......we're in a bit of a mess at the minute because we have an English Bulldog who can only be carried by Japanese Airlines. However, because of a recent fatality, JAL are thinking of banning English Bulldogs. The same applies to Pugs and some Staffies I think. We only found out about this over the weekend by discovering another thread on here. I was going to try and copy a link to the thread but I'm not much of an IT Whizz. The thread is called something like "This little terror ma just stop us going" or something like that. I think you should be OK with the Staffie but it'd be best to read the thread and then get advice off shippers. We've been quoted £2.3k by Airpets and £1.8k by Ryslip. Spoke to Airpets this-morning about the JAL ban and they've said it's not a question of 'if' but 'when' the ban comes in. They've said they they could get our bully out to Oz in 3-4 weeks at a push.....but we haven't sold the house and so can't just send her. What if it took another 6 months to sell the house and she'd be in quarantine in Sydney (and it'd be costing us $800-1000/month). Sorry for the long response...hope some of it helps. |
