The question that surprised me was the name and address of my employer, I cannot see how my employers name will help the government identify trends and plan for the future.

It is a strange one.
The ATO takes the aggregated data to compare the nations tax declared income to the census income. It tells the ATO how bad they are doing but not who is fiddling.

I also don't / didn't really understand why some people have a problem with filling in a census. I don't believe that such an exercise is carried out without good reason and I don't really mind reporting what my rent is or what I earn.

I think someone asked earlier why they ask for one's name.
I believe they found that more people lie if they don't give their name to the point that the purpose of the census gets corrupted.

I thought I'd be smart and put that I was unemployed on the 10th but then the buggers asked if I'd been working the previous week
It did occur to me to lie throughout but then I wondered why bother. I didn't tell 'them' anything 'they' don't already know. They didn't ask what I had for dinner last night, s'all good.

That would be a shame. I haven't properly looked at the form yet but I just assumed that it would pretty much the same way as in the UK. Something like the individual identities being made available after 100 years or so.

Not that long ago it was all destroyed but I think in recent times you can opt to have your data stored and released in 99 years.

Just looking at the form now - it could be an identity thieves christmas round here!!!
If you go paper-based how do you know the person rocking up to collect forms is genuine and can be trusted?
I didn't get a privacy envelope either - form was hanging out of the letterbox. Wouldn't have thought it was that difficult for someone to knock up some sort of fake ID then just go round and scoop up forms on the appropriate day.
Also confused as to why they need employers addresses. Started but couldn't complete the form online without hubs here as i have no idea what his work actual address is(or for that matter what his duties are - geeky engineer stuff probably isnt what they were after really...
