So why is that with basically no manufacturing left in this country we are still one of the worst per capita offenders when our economy has taken the same path ?
We have some of the oldest dirtiest power stations in the world and a huge supply of coal so are we going to be in a big hurry to change that ?

I'm not convinced that fixing one polluting technology with another polluting technology is such a bright idea.

I think people make up this explanation. I've never seen anything to back it up.

Back in the 90s when the UK was a much bigger polluter than it is now about 25% of its electricity was nuclear. Nowadays, the nuclear component is about the same. What really made the difference was the switch from coal to gas.

Who said that there was no manufacturing left in this country?

Even if there was no manufacturing left there is still plenty of industry. And yes dirty power stations do contribute.

What's your point?

And on the other side, from a source independent of aussie politics:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/07..._in_australia/

And here's Forbes giving two cheers for the plan:

Not sure I agree with everything said (give economists too much credence) but it unusual for someone to say something nice about politicians (except the politicians themselves).

Economists like trading schemes because trading schemes are the crux of pure economics.

This is why Malcolm Turnbull, a former trader, likes the scheme.

Plenty of opportunities for traders to get rich trading carbon.

Just look at the fraud of carbon trading credits in the European scheme - its been a disaster. The scheme also did things like buying up productive land in Australia so tress can be planted for carbon credit. Planting tress is a good thing but on productive farming land?

Here is my plan: I stand next to an open coal seam with a lighter paused over it and phone the government demand one million/billion/trillion (depending on the rate of inflation) dollars or I’ll set it on fire .

The whole emissions thing really confuses me. Apparently, the hole in the ozone over NZ / OZ may be caused by the amount of cattle and sheep farting. Apparently, recent Volcano activity has negated the effects of any savings for the past few years. Do the scientists actually know?

If this is about Co2, could I make a suggestion for a fairer tax - we all breath out co2, and the more we breathe, the more we produce - so lets put a tax on exercising. Works for me.
