Even if the tools are steam cleaned and certified, there is no guarantee that AQIS won't want them done again. Just clean them thoroughly with strong disinfectant and ensure there is no dirt or soil on them. Waste of money getting them certifiably cleaned. Same with the wood. It doesn't need certifying. AQIS are only concerned about wood carrying pests - so things like live woodworm, or stuff coming from places like Central America or SE Asia.
Ordinary wooden articles are fine, just make sure they are declared. They may not even be inspected.
If you do self-pack then AQIS may inspect more boxes, but if you do a good inventory there they may just pass most of them straightaay and just look at a couple.
Personally, forget the certifying/professional cleaning, and just decide whether you want to pack for yourself or not.

From my experience I would say let them pack everything for you. You will get so much more in and less breakage if it's packed professionally. Don't forget it's going by rail to Vancouver before it goes by boat to Brisbane. We did the door to door thing and it was so much easier. The company we used (AMJ Campbell) said they would not deal with customs if we packed it ourselves, so rather than us have to try to deal with customs as well as all the other bits that go with moving to a new country we let them do it. Over here it's Allied Pickfords who take care of the move.
Just on a personal note...I spent a year living and working just outside Schreiber in Rossport when I was much younger. My boyfriend at the time worked for CP rail and used to take me all the time to TBay (big trip to the city!!) when he had a western run. I love it up there but sure don't miss the cold and snow.
Comet555 is from Ft McMurray and lives in Brisbane. I think they're back visiting family at the moment, but look for her user name. She's very helpful.

What a small world! I love the Rossport area. We camped at Rainbow Falls Provincial Park this past weekend. Stunningly gorgeous countryside, and certainly can't complain about our July weather. If it was like this year-round (or even for half the year!) then we'd probably stay. The all-too-short, fully "snowless" season from June to Sept isn't working for us anymore. This year's "deep freeze" (-25 to -40 degrees) lasted for the better part of Jan/Feb!
I did notice Comet555 on the forum a few weeks ago. Thanks for that!

Yes, we're currently weighing our options. Tempting to go for the (much) less expensive option of freight-forwarding, but would definitely not look forward to the added stress that comes with it.

Where are you moving to, Havera? Where you from? I'm originally from Dundas Ontario, hub is from Oakville but we lived just outside Vancouver for 4 years and in Burlington Ontario for 13 years before moving here.

Our (preliminary) estimates ranged from $7,000 (door-to-port) to $14,000 - $20,000 (door-to-door) from Thunder Bay to Brisbane. Understandably, we're leaning toward the door-to-port option. Haven't tried AMJ Campbell yet, though -- will give them a call!

If you ever get back out to the Rossport way, stop in the Rossport Inn. I worked there the first summer he was open, 25 years ago. There are some wonderful old photos on the walls of the famous people who used to come up for the fishing derby back in the '40's & '50's. There's one of Bing Crosby with a MASSIVE fish. Our family is planning to move to Australia from Canada next year (already got our visas). I am wondering if anybody from Canada moved with high school children and how they got adapted to this move. Our son is the only one who is extremely unhappy about the idea of moving. If he was younger I would not worry about it too much, but now he got all his friends etc..
Any experience?

Surf lessons was one of the first things my kids did when we moved to Perth. They now love to head down to the beach to surf or bodyboard when it's hot. My daughter, now 14 1/2 is going to try kite surfing this summer.
There's surf lifesavers if he wants to get involved in lifeguarding. It's a great way for him to meet other teenagers - especially girls. http://www.slsa.asn.au/default.aspx?s=surflifesavers
I think he'll find it easy to make friends here. People seem to like the Canadian accent are always interested to ask about what Canada's like.

We're moving to the Brisbane area early next year. Can't offer any advice on this (we'll have a 2-yr old in tow, not quite in high school yet!) but just wanted to say best wishes and best of luck with the big move! It's great to see so many canucks on this forum, this particular thread has been very helpful.
I don't know if you play hockey but there are a couple of rinks in Brisbane, so you can play here if you like. There's always lots of Canadians on the hockey teams.

On a totally unrelated note, we just had a new nurse start at work a couple of weeks ago who's from Whitby, just east of Toronto; only an hour or so east of where I'm from. She sounds like Bob & Doug McKenzie! I can't believe I used to sound so much like a hoser. Thankfully the accent faded pretty quickly.

In case you're wondering how we managed to get Coaches corner on tv my husband could not live without hockey so he ordered Game Centre from nhl.com

So now whenever he wants to watch it we hook up the computer to the tv and use the tv as a second monitor so to speak. My husband is really happy because he gets his hockey fix now. We actually get about 1-2 games a week on Foxtel but not very many Penguins games, so this seems to have solved the problem!

About 20 years ago I dated a guy who was a sales rep for Labatt so we used to go to all the sporting events and the after game parties. Lots of times we had some of the best seats to the Jays games when they were still at the old Exhibition Stadium. We went to a function at Copps and Don Cherry was there. He was absolutely lovely in person - not at all his TV persona. My hub doesn't like hockey (or pretty much any sport for that matter) so I never really got to watch hockey or baseball.
