Never get the buy one get one free deals in coles/wollies.
Food is more expensive in Aus.
Rent/petrol cheaper, however wages reflect this.

We (Australians) aren't big eaters of baked beans. We fart enough as it is without 3rd party help, thanks.

Is it really the case that you can't find a good curry anywhere? With the "relatively" high amount of asian immigrants, surely they would know when they were on to a good thing.
Oh well, will just have to make my own. Are there asian supermarkets around gold coast/brissy?

There's plenty of Asian stores and restaurants around Brisbane and the Coast. You'll have no problem finding them.

In the UK Asian means Indian/bangaldeshii/pakistani. This is reflected in the great British " curry house"
Aus is good for chinise/thai food. Indian food is rare in Oz and not what a Brit would identify as a decent curry, the aussies pretty much dismiss it in perference for thai.

Heinz do spaghetti aswell but it is different it has cheese n the sause, you can get regular (with cheese) or extra cheesy, different but nice (not sure if the beans are the same)
You dont get a curry house like you do over here, indian takeaway is pretty much a meat (alway worried about what "meat" is exactly) curry or a chicken curry, however ther selection in the supermarkets of pataks sauces outweighs the selection in the uk.
As others have said the Asian comunity in Australia is more Chinese, Thai etc than indian and you can still get a damn good feed.

We've had two great local chip shops taken over by Pommy owners and the quality and portion sizes have dropped dramatically.

Have you bought fish and chips in the UK recently? It is about £5 for a standard portion of fish and chips and the fish is about twice as small as it was 5 yrs ago - depetion of cod stocks in the North Sea!!

Heinz beans - yes, in all supermarkets, unless shane warne has eaten them all that is.
Breadmakers.. can anyone tell me are they any good? I'm thinking of buying one ( I love warm hot crusty bread) , but don't know where to start... can someone explain the run down on them ( have not got a clue about these gadgets) .. i.e. does the bread come out with a nice crisp crust.. like a cob loaf .. how long does it take to make a loaf in one? Is it a gadget.. ie , you tend to use it for the first few weeks and gets chucked in the cupboard with the dusty food processor which you don't use because it's too much trouble to put together and clean afterwards. Best makes etc.. are they any good, do you use them often.. or are they collecting dust after a while?
cheers
P.s iceburg lettuce is down in price at last, around $1.45 in my local woolworths now.. last week in Bilo it was just 75 cents.. special offer. but potatoes are up

I have got a breadmaker. It is great as you can put it on the timer before you go to bed and you wake to the aroma of freshly baked bread.
When I first got mine, I used it for making loads of different breads (rosemary and potato was my favourite), I used it for pizza and bun dough and I was always making cinnamon rolls like you buy in cinnabon Yummy

I then had a look at my bum in the mirror and not use it for a while as they can be lethal
I think that these could be one of those things that you use a lot when you first get it and then it gets sent to the back of the cupboard
Have a nice day.

Bugger me - I was in town shopping so I checked the price of Bloody Baked Beans - HomeBrand $0.65 / 420 g; Heinz $1.27 / 450 g, $1.87 / 850 g (all kinds of funny flavours to keep the Baked Bean aficionado diverted for life).
So I decided on Chilli con Carne tonight:
$6.25 / 700 g good lookin' pork ribs,
$1.39 / 375 g dry red kidney beans,
$0.64 / 683 g paleish stewing tomatoes,
$0.22 / 73 g reasonable garlic.
(Had the chillis etc)
Total $8.50
Prep time ~15 min, cook time ~3 hours.
6 meals for office workers, 4 for proper workers.
BTW:
Rot-gut white bread: $2 / 750 g loaf - stale tomorrow.
Schinkenbrot: $3.95 / 900 g loaf - good for ~2 weeks.
