I been to a few of them and even the ones close to the city are clean and never as crowded as the photo of Manly, Coogee etc.

For surfing you need to head to the ocean beaches.

When I first saw Bondi Beach I was disappointed - Coogee, Bronte, Maruba etc are all better but less famous.

Best beach I've visited so far was 7 mile beach at Port Douglas in Queensland - perfect water, sand and sky - heaven (and only about 6 other people on the whole beach!! The photo of Manly looks like Brighton on a bank holiday - not what I want.)

Still to visit 90 mile beach in Victoria.
I often wonder what people are expecting from a beach 20 mins drive from the CBD?

Good point, suppose we aare getting a bit pickey wanting the whole beach. I use to work in central London and lunches were often spent walking along the Thames - when the tide is out there are a few small beaches near Waterloo and Blackfriars bridges. A quick search on google shows that enen these will attrack large crowds..............

This was Rosebud beach today. Great weather and hardly anyone on the beach. What more could you ask for:cool:

Another vote here for Mission Beach in Northern Queensland, totally uncrowded and backed by tropical rainforest.

Also highly recommended:

Cable Beach – Broome – Western Australia
Eighty Mile Beach – Near Broome – Western Australia
Margaret River – Western Australia

On Sydney Harbour there are a few nice beaches. Nielsen Park and Balmoral are 2 worth seeking out. They are flat and have very visible shark nets.

The surfer rubs it on the top of the board to create a non slip surface. Wet epoxy resin is very slippy.

There is nothing worse than catching a great wave and slipping on the board.

OK, since you'se are all me lit'l pet Poms I'll let you in on a lit'l secret:

Doing The Harbour Walk

Of the lot the Little Queens Avenue beach off Vaucluse Road is the nicest. Nice overhanging fig trees for shade and city views. Perfect for a Lebo picnic and a deep ponder.

Question for Bondi and other Sydneysiders

We have some friends maybe coming out for a holiday to Perth end of this year, they did the east coast last year and Bondi was their favourite place. I am a bit worried that Perth will seem really dull an empty to them. What is the attraction of Bondi (never been & don't know much about it - apart from lots of folk seem to love it). They are the sort of people who like weekends in NY etc. Mind you they have a baby in tow this year so Perth may offer a bit of respite.

Thanks
DI

Bondi has pubs, 2 clubs, restaurants a horrible 200 m of Maccas and fast food chains, surf, snorkelling when its flat, a graffiti wall, surf shops, other clothes shops, a sunday market and the place is buzzing.

The beach is nice enough and you can surf on it. I have never been to Perth so I cannot comment on a comparison.

Hmm - obviously the buzz of it all that's the attraction for them. Can't say any of Perths beaches are buzzing, suppose Scarborough could manage a little zzz. Oh well, I did tell them it was different from the east coast. Thanks for that though.
