Marj lived in Geelong but she finished her VCE exams the day before I arrived, and passed her driving test the day before that and she and all her mates had organised to spend a few days camping at Barwon so that they could get drunk, mainly. I turned up at 6am and we pretty much went straight to the campsite. Hence my first night in Oz was spent camping at Barwon Heads. And very nice it was too (what I remember of it )

Barwon was beautiful, very quiet, just a golf course, the campsite, a bus stop and a chippy. Not like that now!
it's great that you kept in contact with a penpal though.. and got to visit!! I was rubbish at writing to people, apart from Hubby before we were able to move in together (2 yrs of writing!!!)..

At least you were able to see Barwon before it was destroyed by commercialism.... For me, Byron Bay/Broken Head and surrounds is the same. I went camping at Byron every year when I was baby, and it was bliss Don't recognise the area now - it's plain bloody awful really. Oh well, that's the progress of time.. guess the areas will go out of favour one day and be left to wrack and ruin..

Yeah, it's always the way. I like Byron too, but when we were there (exactly a year ago, in fact!) I'd noticed the change even since I was last there in 1996.

There was a good kiwi film (yes really) about a middle aged, bald guy that gets drunk and wakes up the following morning to find everyone has died :scared: (or was it disappeared). I have seen other versions of it since. There was an American version (with Steve McQueen I think but could be wrong) and I seem to remember the Simpsons parodied it. But I saw the kiwi version first so they get the credit

Well done! I had a surf for it and couldn't find it. Your next mission (should you choose to accept it) is find out what the American version was and who starred in it

The Lighthorsemen is a superb WW1 film in the vein of Gallipoli and Breaker Morant. Its available on DVD and if you buy the R4 (Aussie version) you also get a great DTS soundtrack.

Dont overlook this if you like Aussie cinema.

Mrs D....You should if you get the chance and see it at the rental place. It is truely hilarous.

I have been through Nhill a couple of times on the way to Adelaide

Best:
Passion - Richard Roxburgh plays Percy Grainger (woof!)
Monkey Grip...this is my Holy Grail to find on DVD.

Worst:
can't think of any really. I've been out of Aus for so long I don't get to see many Australian films.

Sounds like a typical day in the life of an average New Zealander
