There are 250-350 species of ant around Brisbane. There are 1300 named species in Aus, but probably twice as many unnamed.

We have several nests of each sort on our property by my estimation.

Qld Museum publishes a guide to common Brisbane ants. It helps to know the enemy.

I was told by someone on here a long time ago that urine
was good for ant bites...

I can categorically state that this is false...

I would like to apologise to the family I met whilst picnicking at the weekend..

Sounds like bullants or meat ants. Attracted to meat -dead or alive. Great scavengers. nests can be large, underground obvious by fine stones or fine gravel around top which can be relatively flat against ground and easily walked onto or disturbed when gardening.

Bites painful relative to number that get to sting you. So brush off, or pull off those with fangs in and get away from nest - these are amazingly quick and work fast as a group. In hotter areas they are active at nights and tents can be mistakenly erected on these nests as you discover just after dark.

To treat nest in garden - boiling/hot water/oil/diesle or insecticide poured into nest only reduces numbers - and may bugger up the environment. They need food sources so keep area clear of rubbish, insects etc that are their food source. They can travel 10s of meteres for food so check wider area for their food sources.
Remember where the nest is and tell others to avoid. This breed does not like water so will naturally reduce as ground becomes wetter after drought.

Product called stingose in shops can help stings, also ice for local treatment, also roots of ferns broken and rubbed on them.

Cheers

Stingose is the best thing we've found. But ice-packs are a must sometimes as well.

Interesting article which suggests crazy ants are a cure for crabs

Crazy ant quarantine

Wednesday, May 7, 2008
© The Cairns Post

A LARGE colony of yellow crazy ants has been discovered at Bentley Park.
The invaders, which can wreak havoc on native plants and animals, were reported to authorities by a vigilant Silkwood Ridge Estate resident.
Biosecurity Queensland officers are carrying out a survey to determine the extent of the infestation and an emergency quarantine zone and notices have been sent out to the owners of nine properties around the upper part of Fitzmaurice Drive.
Biosecurity Queensland general manager Keith McCubbin said while the ants direct impact on people was minimal, the impact on the environment was more serious. He said the ants sprayed formic acid, which debilitated their prey.
"Consequently, they can displace native species, not just insects but also nesting birds could be impacted," Mr McCubbin said.
Mr McCubbin said yellow crazy ants were tramp ants - a group that includes fire ants and electric ants.
The devastation of the red crab population on Christmas Island is an extreme example of being overwhelmed by yellow crazy ant infestation.
The Bentley Park colony is outside the crazy ant Edmonton Quarantine Zone and follows the lifting of quarantine restrictions at three properties at Woree and Portsmith

A man boarded a plane in Cairns with a box of frozen crabs...

On request, and as a favour, a hostess took the box and put it in the crews refrigerator. She was surprised to hear the man say he was holding her responsible for keeping the crabs frozen, and speak strongly about what would happen if the crabs spoiled.

Shortly before landing in Sydney, the hostess announced to the cabin: "Would the gentleman who gave me the crabs in Cairns, please raise your hand?"

No hand went up ... so she took them home and shared them with friends.
