And it really is that simple! Spend within your means (it's the same in any country).
If you leave the UK without having a car that has A/C, cruise control, broadband internet connection, a five bed house - then you shouldn't get to Oz and complain that you can't afford it. If you can't afford it in the UK, then chances are you can't afford it in Oz.
For too long, brits are told that the UK is so superior and expensive - it doesn't have to be - unless you live in Surrey, in which case life's one big rip-off

As for letting kids play outside, bear in mind that the sun is fearsome in Oz. So too, childhood obesity etc is as bad as here so I think you'll find there are a lot of kids in Oz sitting in front of the TV during the day, etc.

According to this month's 'Australian Property Investor'
The Average family income in WA is $1042 per week
The average house price $255,700
In WA the average family spend 25.5 per cent of their income on the mortgage alone.
Is that good news or bad......draw your own conclusion

Must be closer to 50% of income in Sydney.
eg: in Bondi the average house price is $950,000. Athough further west in Penrith its ONLY $360,000

Thought I'd bump this thread up for any newbies.
I posted on here before coming out to Oz and was worried that I was being too cocky about cost of living...
Turns out that I wasn't wearing rose-tinted glasses tho'... Where it counts Oz is cheaper and wages aren't necessarily lower over here.
Still can't believe a weekly shopping bill could come to $470! Our biggest bill came to $124 and that lasted almost two weeks!

I, foolishly, took in too much of the 'doom and gloom' from some of the posts on here and proclaimed to my wife that 'we would struggle to find decent-paid jobs'.
I'm now eating my words - much to my wife's amusement.
Just thought it would be good to get this thread bumped up because it's good food for thought (good or bad).

It would be foolish not to have researched the availability and salaries in the profession that you work in. That is how you will get the best idea.
The point of the thread was to show what you would need to survive day to day life in Australia. In many ways its a pointless thread in that everyones circumstances are different and you won't know until you start living your life.
I was the one who made the original comment on needing $80000 to live a comfortable life and for me I still stand by that statement. My salary IS less than the UK and my total outgoings are the same if not slightly more. It doesn't mean I am not happy with the move I just say these things so that anyone who may feel that they maybe in a simillar situation to mine may gain some insight into life over here.

I agree with what you say - however I would add that 'a comfortable life' is a subjective statement and that every person will have a different view on what constitutes a comfortable life - it might not necessarily include a large degree of material wealth - it may mean enjoying the simple (cheaper) things in life. So whilst agree with the salary level you mention, it is only because of the lifestyle choices such as house location, car etc that I have chosen.
I think the thread is a great idea and a good reality check.
In general I have found that the cost of living is about the same as in UK, relative to income. It is certainly not cheap out here. But because the sun shines all the time (in Brisbane anyway) I don't fret too much about it.
Good luck to anyone trying to get out here.

[/QUOTE]It is all subjective, but I found it to be a good thread before I came out here. It made me think quite clearly about all eventualities.
For some, there will be more money out here, for others there won't but I just wanted to point out that it doesn't always have to be a financial 'step-down' coming out to Oz.
