Hmmm, odd. I thought they were in circulation before I left; I guess not.

You Know you have been in the US too long when you no longer remember what your money used to look like?

I left in 2005 and they weren't in circulation yet then.

I know, because if they were, I'd have taken a full set over here with me and would have made them into some kind of display

When your mum tells you about the cool first day covers that came out and it takes you a while to realise she's talking about the stamps and the sets.

I don't know why she still gets them, habit I guess, but my brothers been dead almost 11 years but he used to collect stamps and she'd send him the sets.

I bought the ones I have at an antique shop. I haven't gone on a proper hunt yet but there are a few old decomissioned lines round my way I might try out one day.

Bloody right. Though I'm not quite at a shed-full yet. One day, maybe.

I had no idea how cool UK money is. How can they keep it secret that well, that long?

I did that with the old money when I was a nipper. Right proud of it I was.

I particularly liked pre-decimal coins. Shillings were easy enough to find in circulation as 5p pieces but I had a nice collection of thruppeny bits and sixpences and a few of the old big penny coins.

Well, sixpences stayed in circulation until, I think, 1978 as a 2 1/2p coin, though no decimal ones were minted. I guess using threepenny bits as 1 1/4p coins would have been a bit too much, though!

I was born in 1979, so I missed that one. Plus they did away with the 1/2p in 1985 anyway, hence it being easier for me to find shillings.
