And crowns too, minted as commemorative coins, though still legal tender long after decimalisation. If only the Bank of England had retained the crown instead of "inventing" the 20p, the UK's currency would much more closely resemble US currency.

I had one of those that my dad gave me during Euro '96. Didn't last long though before it found its way towards buying 10 B&H

It should be noted that while previous designs of notes and coins may be withdrawn from circulation they can still be taken to your local (UK) bank and they should accept them.

Should they turn their nose up at it, you can also go direct to the Bank of England. Same applies when they are severely damaged.

I found an old ten pound note (I think it was the Florence Nightingale one so at least a dozen years after withdrawl) in a book when I was clearing out to emigrate. Bank took it no questions.

Of course at a certain point the collector value is more than the face value.
