South American Country Tops Expat Location Survey
It may not be many British people’s first choice as an expat destination, but Ecuador has topped an international poll to find the world’s top country for expats.
Conducted by InterNations, The Expat Insider 2014 asked 14,000 expatriates from over 160 countries across the globe a variety of questions about their life abroad.
Touching upon various areas of expat living – including general quality of life, working abroad, family life, leisure and making friends abroad, international romance and expat relationships, and personal finances – some 61 countries received enough responses to qualify in the rankings.
Ecuador scored highly on all aspects of the survey, with an impressive 91 per cent of respondents saying they were satisfied with their new lives there. It ranked first in personal finance, as well as for ease in making friends. On the downside, 37 per cent of Ecuador-based expats did say that it was difficult to live in the South American country without speaking Spanish, although 30 per cent felt that learning Spanish was ‘very easy’.
Luxembourg was the second most popular country, mainly for the quality of living the country offers its mainly short term working expats, while Mexico was third.
Kuwait was found to be the least popular country among expats, while Saudi Arabia and Greece were also unpopular destinations.
The main reason respondents to the survey had for wanting to live abroad was for work purposes – with 16 per cent moving for a job they found by themselves, 13 per cent moving due to an employer relocating them, and a further 10 per cent emigrating due to a partner’s job. Moving for love (11 per cent) was also a popular reason for relocating, as was seeking a better quality of life (9 per cent).
