But GPO only applies to spouse (or spouse survivor) benefits, right? The original post sounds like it was referring to a person's own contributions, hence WEP. And yes per durham lad 30+ years of SS substantial earnings avoids WEP entirely.

That is true. Clearly he did not have 30+ years of substantial contributions, a mistake was made (highly unlikely) or he supplied incorrect information when applying. No way to tell without a lot more information. In any case pointless to pursue information about a friend of a friend with no first hand facts.

Does this apply to UK citizens who worked in the USA (like myself) and are resident in the UK??

Yes, I believe it applies to anyone who is receiving or going to receive SS benefits. I am resident in the UK and applied for SS a couple of months ago. My application on my SS online account has had the status "waiting for review by an agent in London" since November 12th. I don't believe that review is now necessary and the 3 forms detailing my 3 UK pensions that I sent in to the US Embassy are now irrelevant. (Assuming President Biden signs it into law)

Truly a Xmas miracle. Never thought such a bill would ever get passed given how many times they have previously attempted something similar. I believe that Trump supports the bill as well, so it should be signed, sealed and delivered by Biden with no threat of repeal with the new incoming Trump administration. I am pretty sure the new DOGE will find ample ways to offset the cost for it, not that they need to do so in this case.

Yeah, I heard the police representative visited Mar-a-Largo to appeal in person to Trump to support the bill a few days ago.

https://fop.net/2024/12/trump-backs-...rity-fairness/

Patrick Yoes, National President of the Fraternal Order of Police, and Executive Director Jim Pasco met yesterday with President-elect Donald J. Trump at his home in Mar-a-Lago to discuss issues of mutual interest to the FOP and the incoming Administration. They also talked about the pending Senate votes on H.R. 82, the “Social Security Fairness Act”—the FOP’s top priority.

“During our meeting, President-elect Trump expressed his commitment to help us pass this critical legislation, which will ensure public employees receive the benefits they have earned—just like every other American who paid into Social Security,” Yoes said.

President-elect Trump told the FOP leaders: “You have been fighting for this for many years, and I know how important it is to you. You and your members have been good to me, and I am going to help you with this."

My US SS, based on hubby's contributions, was completely wiped out by WEP.

If you are claiming spouse benefits, I think you are being subject to GPO not WEP.
Now that it's all going away, at least the confusion will stop.

I finished work for the year yesterday. I was planning to go back Jan 2nd to get my 30th year of SS and give a couple of months notice while accumulating enough substantial earnings, but maybe now I won't go back. There are a lot of winners here, but my boss might not be one of them!

SD something doesn't sound right there.

If your SS is based solely on your husbands account it should not be subject to WEP. Your husband's SS should be calculated including taking off any WEP he is subject to. You should get 50% of his, without any further WEP adjustment being made.

Indeed, will make life a lot easier for expats who qualify for Social Security and also have a UK pension.
