where did you get your info from. Yes you do need a police certificate and it takes 40 days to get one so depending on how far you are down the line I would start thinking about getting one. Here is a link to all the documents you will need for the interview

Generally you get an application form from the police wherever you are living
in England, pay the dosh - about £10 - and they search locally and then forward
it to the national bureau who do a similar search and then send you their
report. Since you're not living in England I suggest you contact the central
bureau direct (you're not usually allowed to do that if you are in England but
I don't see what else you could do.
National Identification Service
Subject Access Office
Room 350
New Scotland Yard
Broadway
London
SW1H 0BG
Tel: 020 7230 2958
Fax: 020 7230 2688
Knock the first zero off those numbers when dialling from abroad.
Best of luck.

Call 0121 236 5000 or the 0845 number in the Business section of the Brum
Phone book..
ask for the Subject Access Data protection dept.. Nice woman answered me.. I

METROPOLITAN police force only on their web site, but the West mids force
doesn't have a d/l able form
Rang on Friday.. Form arrived today.. Sat.. Application for the Information
held on the PNC takes up to 40 days.. so get it underway now..

Interesting, I KNOW it's been well over 40 days since my husband applied for his police certificate (he's a Brummie too, from Great Barr), and nothing back yet. But since we just started the 130 process and the K3 is moving at the speed of a glacier I guess there's no great hurry........

Re: When does UK police certificate become too old to us?
The police certificate is considered valid for a year from date of issuance for our purposes.
It is possible to begin the administrative processing of a fiancé(e) visa application before the INS approves the petition. Therefore, your fiancé may download the forms from our website or,if you provide his full U.K.postal address,we will send him the packet of forms. The forms should be completed and returned to the Immigrant Visa Unit as soon as possible. Upon receipt we will open a provisional working file in his name.

Re: When does UK police certificate become too old to us?
you can download the packet 3 forms, including the checklist which tells you
all the documents to collect, direct from the London embassy website.
www.usembassy.org.uk
there's also a faq there and all sorts of helpful directions.
best of luck
