No pubs, no vacation and more stress, but more money, house and cars.

Where i do it the most is where my best quality of life is, it's where i'm happiest. Simple really.

I am a big driving enthusiast and my better car is more fun to drive thus improving my quality of life. Also there are more opportunities to exploit its capabilities in the USA due to the prevalence of autocross events and drivers ed locally
My bigger house improves my quality of life because I can much more comfortably entertain friends and hold gatherings - much easier to fit 40 people in my house here opposed to getting people in my cramped flat.
Also, although we have established that BBQ'ing is bad for you, its quite difficult to do this in a 1 bedroom flat as opposed to a house on nearly an acre with a big deck....
although bizarrely enough, I, like Patrick, recently spent a lot of cash to see the Rollling stones, I've paid peanuts to see Coldplay, Prince, Sting, Annie Lennox and others.
I also generally pay 10-20 bucks (scalping) NHL/NFL/NCAA sports, thats if i don;t get free tickets.

If you're into having stuff - BBQ, large car, 50' telly, mansion, cuddly toy, panini thing - better here
If you're into doing stuff - pub, holidays, outdoors, friends, larfs, parties - better there
Simple innit?

its hard to measure 'quality of life' as im sure everyone has a different meaning of the phrase, sure i find i earn a lot more in US, have a lot more material things - but you have to work a lot longer/more for it in US with less holidays

The fact that you live in Houston can certainly do that to you. I hated living there, now live in California which is much much better. Less crime as well!

From what I remember from a few years ago, my list of great things in Houston amounted to:
1) great shopping
2) um...
3) that's it.
