Re: USA graduate trainee positions
Could I ask you to ellaborate on what it was that qualified you as having specialist knowledge? Just to try and match this to my own situation.
It's quite laughable to listen to loads of brits who got the hell out of here complain about the US. If its so bad then get back over here although something tells me you'll all stay in the country you whinge about so much.
I'm 22 and have spent over 2 years living in the US in total so I'd hardly call myself a tourist. I've seen the good and bad of the US, worked in both Laguna Beach and in Compton so its more rude on your part to say that.

Moving to the US was not something I had even considered prior to being asked by my company. The decision to move was not taken lightly, even with a considerable relocation package on offer.

If you opened up one of my vacuums to do the carpets, they would be sucked into the machine, along with half the room's contents, and most of the air. And your eardrums would burst in the process as the hypersonic vacuum pumps crashed.
Trust me. I've done it a few times!
The only problems we've had in the run up have been with Seattle fans. hmmm.

Sorry to drag this up, but it's a misconception I get here in the US often that the 'rivalries' are significant.
The fact of the matter is that the US is pretty poor when it comes to sports passion. It's much more of a chilled out, take-the-whole-family enterprise. That's fine if you want a relaxing and enjoyable Sunday afternoon, but 'passion' or 'rivalry' are not really appropriate words in the global scheme of things.
To use Glasgow as an example again, pretty much every time the 'Old Firm' (Rangers and Celtic) play soccer, someone gets murdered. Often more than one person (incidentally, the loss of an OF fan is arguably not a bad thing). And a good few permanent disfigurements are always guaranteed. Now that's a proper rivalry! You can't honestly say America has anything like that!
The only thing here that slightly resembles decent passion and rivalry is college football. Of course this is totally down to alcohol, just like in the UK.
Sometimes the NHL crowds can get a bit rowdy, I suppose.
But again, comparing anything in the US to an average boxing session at Millwall is ridiculous.
Again, the OP has a point.

For me its Leeds, who have always had a reputation for trouble. I held a season ticket from being 12 until when I moved out here, and have travelled to hundreds of away games with them and around Europe. I have seen the odd fight, but nothing more because I don't mix in those circles. When I have seen trouble, most people are trying to get out of the way, or try and calm the situation down.
Sure you can go looking for a fight if thats what you want, it rarely happens inside or around the grounds, and lots of times doesn't really include fans who are going to the game anyway.
The press highlight every fight at a sporting event in the UK as hooligans/organized crime... Here it gets swept under the carpet, as fans getting over excited, you just have to look at the riots after the Lakers won this year, however all police leave was cancelled prior to the game as they knew there would be trouble.

Caleyjag I think your views and comments are ridiculous, most fans revel in seeing their rivals torn to bits on the pitch, but to suggest that a fans murder is not a bad thing to opposing fans makes you a total arsehole. Don't make all football fans out to be as bad as you.
Also, I've seen plenty of fans escorted out of grounds in the UK for swearing.

I can't believe you would joke about something like that.
Personally, I don't think death is that offensive. Shit happens. I like joking about cancer too. Get over yourself.
Also, all old firm fans are wankers. Fact.

i 'm with caleyjag on this one. I cant stand people that get so sensitive about humour. You can find humour in all manner or things, if you want to go around looking to be offended by stuff there are plenty of places on the internet you can go. grow up.
also, I'm no hooligan by any means, but I much prefer the edgy atmosphere you get a european football to the rather boring atmosphere at American sports. just my preference, but I'll never get used to being able to sit amongst the 'other teams' fans.

no, if someone made a joke specifically about my family members dying, I would not find it funny. however I dont agree that whole sujects should be off limits just incase someone happens to be offended which is what you seem to be suggesting.
