Very true Bob. Where I grew up, there were a black couple (originally from Jamaica) that had a dress shop. That was it for the non Caucasian population. Oh and also 30 miles away was a black lawyer who became a state supreme court justice in New Hampshire. So yes I grew up in an isolated environment but then it was up in the sticks after all. However, when I went off to college my introduction to the real world began,
Then came the Army and living where we were told to go.

If I was not married to a USC then I would not be living here (although I could legally through my L1)
Most things in America are worse than in the UK I left behind 2 years ago. Seriously, the only thing I think is better in the USA is the price of petrol and the weather where I live (which helps facilitate a better quality of life in some respects)
HOWEVER
The UK has seemed to have changed disproportionately in the last two years, developing a thuggish street culture where happy slapping incidents abound and where the government plans to reward under-16 year old mothers with a cash grant of 5000 quid for what is essentially an illegal activity
I've been to the UK several times in the last year and the UK is a lot less desirable as a place of residence to me.
But...
I think the reality now is that I am used to having a great house and a great car that would be out of my reach in the UK and this combined with more disposable income would be the decider for me to stay in the USA
So the upshot is I have to put up with
Shite healthcare system
Shite food
Shite education for my kids
Guncrime - a friend was recently killed in a essentially random shooting
House made of wood and asphalt shingles
Insular and ignorant people around me
Integration of church and state
in order that I can maintain my materialistic lifestyle
It's a conundrum

Find the food OK, but I am sure it varies by region.
Actually a lot less here than when I lived in London, and at least they seem to get their just results if caught.
Housing, well yes and no, so dry where I am that construction style makes sense and god knows how much it would have cost in brick
Location, location, location.
I read about it, but have not actually seen it here. Now if I lived in Colorado Springs it may be a different story.

I complain about the volume of traffic but I'd miss the hustle and bustle and especially the diversity you get while living in a city
