Thing is, some of the people you've judged I happen to know as very decent people . I've been hanging out here for over two years (!). You can object all you like, but don't judge until you know the person.

Well, better late than never, but apologies to you Celtic Angel if I offended and thanks to those who stuck up for me -- and who knew what I meant.
At the risk of putting my foot in my mouth again, here goes....
To me, it's not the UK vs US -- both countries have their pluses and minuses. I guess the perspective I'm coming from is that I've lived in both countries (as well as Belgium) and I'd like my kids to have more than one perspective. Yes, there are Americans who have travelled, who have been exposed to different cultures and who come from varied backgrounds, but I've also lived in areas here where the people haven't travelled outside their country and are only interested in local news (just like some in the UK or in Belgium or any other country I could mention) and I don't want that for my children -- whether it's in America, the UK or any other country.
On the materialism aspect, I stand by what I said -- the culture here is materialistic, just like some other countries I could mention, but I was talking about the US and not other countries. If you read my post, I wasn't saying the US is materialistic and the UK isn't.
Anyway, enough said, I'll sit back and wait for someone else to pick through my post

I think we were leaning toward materialistic, but then again it depends on the day of the week.

I'm just curious, have you SB or anyone else been everywhere in the US or their own country they want to go to? I haven't-still got half of the US to visit and I do want to do so. Everyplace is different and my lack of experience of the west-basically Texas to CA sucks woodpecker eggs raw.

Then what you say is "I disagree, for x, y, and z reasons. Not "somebody call her on her shit FFS". But maybe it's just me.
