And anyway, every country in the world is full of bigots so I don't really see how this reflects badly on the UK in particular.

I agree with your sentiments - but the case was never going to work - the evidence while offensive and leaving a bad taste could hardly be inciting hatred - and the case seems to have been handled badly too.

But lets be fair - there are other countries much worse!

I agree that the case was doomed to failure. After all when it comes down to it, they were basically excercising their right to free speech, and were talking in private. It still doesn't stop them from being a couple of loathsome little turds though.

Slight over reaction .... Sure the politics of the far right are loathesome and will always only appeal to a minority, but the charges and case brought in this case were weak to say the least. All it has done is give undue publicity to a minor political party (yes I know thats a loose term).
There are people in the UK stirring up greater racial hatred who seem immune to prosecution, so its no suprise that this paticular case came to nothing.

What makes me laugh is that you can be a Muslim and stand outside the US Embasssy in London shouting "Death to Bush and Death to Blair" in a big protest BUT you can't be a indiginous native of the UK and say "Send Asylum seekers back where they come from" in a back street northern pub..

No wonder the place is in such a ****ing shambles when the law is not applied evenly.

Prosecute all or prosecute none.

The fact that these BNP guys were even charged in the first place probably caused more racial feelings to rise than the speeches they made in PUBS in the first ****ing place.

Probably all the doing of some do gooding vegetarian liberal in the CPS getting his/her knickers in a twist over a speech in a nothern pub FFS.

I know, but in my experience its a typical "left-wing" tactic to scream some kind of seemingly derogatory comment at someone with an opposing viewpoint eg racist, bigot, sexist, homophobic, etc
They don't have to be able to back it up - just shout it repeatedly in a loud voice

In all fairness, I think it's just as much a typical "right-wing" tactic to do exactly the same thing. "Anti-American", "Anti-British", "Commies", even the term liberal has become a term of derision in the US. So to be honest, both sides are just as bad as each other.

I just find it funny because you here people bleat on about freedom of speach, but what in fact these mudslingers do is remove freedom of speech by embarassing or trying to marginalise their opponents into submission.

And now that i think about it actually don't agree with you - the left are past masters of these tactics, at least in the UK anyway. As rushman pointed out, why were 2 blokes spouting crap in some northern bar charged with this when others can stand on street corners in London chanting death to blair and bush. Either deal with all of them or none of them.

As much as they may be loathsome tw@ts, its a basic right of free speech to call someone else what you like...eg a loathsome tw@t. The calling of them loathsome tw@ts is, infact, no more different than them calling immigrants cockroaches or anything else.

The defeat of Blairs latest bill goes to show that free speech is still a right in the UK.

The whole basis of the freedom of speech is basically to protect an individuals right to an opinion.

You may take a mans money
You may take a mans possessions
You may take a mans Liberty

but no man on Earth, no matter how deplorable he may be, should ev er be denied and opinion or the freedom to voice it. It is the foundation block of freedom itself.
