So does your old man get hot under the collar when you switch on your Neptune?

Ha ha ha should have known talk of washing machines would eventually degenerate!

We bought our Sears own-brand top-loader and matching tumble dryer (both the 'extra capacity' ones, biggest they had) in Dec 1997. The belt came detached from the drum once on the tumble dryer, but we've never had any problems with the washing machine. It's a top-loader, though. Unfortunately the old dragon (MIL) pretty much laid down the law as to what we should buy, as they helped us out with the cost. We use the two machines probably 4x a week and they're still great!

Sorry I'm too late to be of help, but our next washer will be a Staber. http://www.staber.com/ It's designed with a horizontal axis drum that loads from the top. It's also designed so simply that the manufacturer intends for the consumer to be able to perform all repairs themselves!

Don't Paykel make something similar too? Their dishwashers are amazing. The dishwasher techie told dh they're the easiest machines to work on.
