Thank God.

But If I were of the low skilled group I'd look at improving my skills in order to get a better job that offered benefits.

So no economy needs unskilled workers?

Good for you. If you feel secure that you will always have access to medical care, great.

Funny how those who can afford it opt for private insurance coverage even in the UK

OF COURSE!!!

Why didn't I think of that...

EVERYONE is surely capable of bettering themselves and getting a permanent job with excellent healthcare benefits.

BY GOLLY - I think we've solved the US healthcare crisis!!!

Somebody go and tell the chicken that the sky has stopped falling...

I guess Brits have just been brought up differently, we tend to think even poor people should get healthcare, it seems impossible to bridge that divide. The bit I don't understand is why so many Americans seem to think no tragedy could ever befall them such as losing their job or becoming disabled, in which case they might be poor themselves.

I think so. It's not easy.

My Father was a teacher holding a Masters in Education Administration. He decided he didin't want to teach any longer and ran his own pest control company for a number of years. He decided to get out of that and went to night school (running the business during the day) for a second Masters in Business. He found that degree wasn't getting him the offers he wanted so now in his forties, he went to a technical college to learn IT. Again, at night while working during the day. This finally led to a well paying job in the industry.

My Brother has been a waiter for years, finally had enough of the crap pay and no benefits. He's now attening a technical school learing the heating and air conditioning trade. He qualified for a small grant and took out loans to do this. By all accounts he won't have trouble getting hired upon graduation.

It can be done.

I think that's part of it, at least for me. I was raised to think that I can have anything I want, that I could be anything I want, all it takes is hard work and persistence. But also, that I have to take care of myself and my family because no one else will do it for me, that is my responsibility and my duty.

I was brought up believing that no one deserves anything, if you want something you earn it.
