Not sure I'd bet money on such an ill-defined subject, but if you look at all these definitions you will see a common thread of 'seasonings'. I believe a burger is meant to be, in it's purest form, ground meat with perhaps the addition of onion and salt. Sausage, meanwhile, originates in the idea of a product made from numerous ingredients and preserved by the use of spices. It was intended to be 'offcuts', the stuff you wouldn't serve 'by itself'.

So I think it all comes down to - a burger (in it's intended/original form) is a somewhat simple assembly of a few ingredients, while a sausage is expected to be a good number of ingredients, including both meats and spices.

I love sausages, and I especially love sausage patties!

Mrs tonrob sometimes refers to my willy as a 'love sausage'. Does this confuse matters?

When she squashes it into a disc shape what does she call it then? Because I suspect she calls it your "fun-burger" which greatly affects things.

Now this is enraging. Those of you who know me will know that I will have emailed this quandry to my entire office. Shockingly this response came back from one person -:

"On my way to Long Island we stop at a place in New Jersey and get gas, because not only do they pump it for you, but it is also much cheaper. Everytime we stop and get gas though I joke and say that I am going to get a BURGER DOG. Basically a burger dog consists of a hamburger, rolled up like a hotdog and put on a hotdog bun. 2 years ago while traveling with my partner we decided we would get a BURGER DOG for real, which I might add was thoroughly disgusting. The main reason I had a problem with it..... because I do not put ketchup on hotdogs, I think it is disgusting. So when I had to put Ketchup on my Hamburger Dog, it just didn't seem right. Therefore... I do not eat them anymore. But, yesterday.... on my way home from Long Island, I still said "lets stop and get burger dogs!"

So the answer to your question: If you roll up hamburger does it become Sausage: NO, IT'S A BURGER DOG! And, the next time I go to Long Island, I would be more than happy to bring you one back!"

I know a guy that eats peanut butter and jelly on hamburger buns and makes his kids eat them that way too. When I found out I set his nipples on fire.

See, I don't necessarily see it that way, looking up definitions of "sausage meat" all I could find was:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&d...g&ved=0CBkQkAE

sausage meat (any meat that is minced and spiced and cooked as patties or used to fill sausages)

Aren't burgers made out of meat that is minced, and frequently with added spices (or pretty much whatever else you fancy)?

Given you can make burgers with pretty much any meat (turkey burgers etc.) where do you draw the line - so, a burger is made of sausage meat, right?

It would simply be a beef or "hamburger meat" sausage..vs a pork sausage...

Do you win?
