Have you looked at salary.com to get a ballpark figure for your kind of position in your part of the country? Might be helpful to you.

Its worth taking a bit of time to do your homework........sometimes the cost of things can come as a bit of a shock.........one winter months gas bill in the US .....is the same as my yearly one back in the UK.....I thought we were heating the street.....and then to be told its comes every month not every three.....well....goes without saying...that we spend a lot of our time cold.....

You certainly have to look at the overall picture income v. expenses. We have come across several people from up North who think they want to move into our area then find their salary will drop $10,000.00 to $15,000.00 a year and so decide to stay put. What they fail to take into account is that their overall expenses will more than halve and Winter will last no more than six weeks. Our friends in Michigan pay per month for property tax what we pay per year.

California is a pretty expensive state to live in though...and they have fairly high sales tax...

Completely agree with this - the amount things vary from state to state has to be considered. I've been offered a job in Washington DC and it would represent a 40% increase over what I earn now. But when you factor in property prices and the rest (including lifestyle, family and friends etc), it becomes pretty worthless!

Other things you should consider when negotiating salary is how desperate are you for the job (and how desperate are they to hire you), for instance, if you really want the job but they have a choice of candidates, you might want to accept less, or they'll get someone else who will - conversely, if they really are sold on you, but you are not too bothered/can afford to live without it, you can push the boundaries a good bit and see what you can eke out of them.

Good luck!
