If you've got the time and can afford the petrol, go through the mid west out to new england and check out CT, MA, ME and then wing up Vermont and head back through Canada?
Nice time of the year for it, before it gets cold and just the tail end of the humid heat.

Hmm well having done most of the west coast for me it would be Oregon. The whole coastal area is beautiful, I wanted to stay there! Northern CA is pretty great too. So if yer into nature, sea, forests, might be a good choice!

Santa Fe, NM is a very pretty town - perhaps the most attractive medium sized town in the US I've ever visited, and there seems to be a lot of growth. What kind of work are you looking for? The weather is not bad either - reasonably cold in winter, reasonably hot/dry in the summer - much cooler than much of AZ. Too many galaries and artsy-fartsy folk for my personal liking, but still - not bad. And great food ...
Park City Utah is supposed to be great, despite being in Utah. One of my Aussie buddies who is a typical debauched alcoholic enjoys his life there - so it's not all puritanical mor(m)ons. My favorite place, scenery-wise, in the whole country is Bryce Canyon, so if you do find yourself in Utah give it a look.
I have spent very little (too little) time personally in Denver and Colorado in general; I suspect it is one of the brighter spots of the country in terms of living, outside of CA.
Sounds like you've been up and down the coast already, so you know Seattle, Portland, Eugene, etc - not my cup of tea due to weather, but otherwise very viable. I'd give Northern CA a look, of course, but I presume you are on a mission to find something less expensive than where you are ... I was in Davis this past weekend ... a small college town with at least a semblance of culture; was nicer than I expected and was relatively cheap. How about Tahoe?
I have some friends in Tucson who like it - if you can stand the heat in summer!
I've been looking for somewhere to move to that is cheaper than where I live currently for at least 10 years, and ... while everywhere is cheaper, nowhere is anywhere near as good ... so I'm interested in seeing what you find!
Good Luck ... road trips are awesome!

We did a roadtrip through Montana/Wyoming this summer (actually went as far as South Dakota for a family reunion, saw the Badlands, amazing). Yellowstone is stunning, and Montana is gorgeous. I would highly recommend a Montana/Wyoming trip.
